I just got this massive Nikon Z9 for my hiking trip in Colorado next month and it is way bigger than I thought it would be! I have no idea how people carry these things around. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I need a really tough bag for like $200. What bag even fits this giant thing?

In my experience, the Lowepro ProTactic BP 450 AW II is basically a tank and fits the giant Z9 easily.

  • super rugged
  • hiking friendly

I've been really satisfied with the safety of the Lowepro Flipside 500 AW II. Are you bringing big lenses too? Its a solid budget choice for under 200 bucks tho.

Ngl finding a legit rugged bag for that monster under 200 is kinda tough since most budget options feel like cheap nylon. I had issues with a few bags lately that claimed to fit pro bodies but then the Z9 viewfinder just sticks out way too much... it's super annoying. Not as good as I expected for the price tags. The Tenba Axis V2 24L Backpack Tactical Black is okay, but unfortunately the harness system is way too stiff out of the box. It actually fits the depth of the Z9 tho, which is the main struggle. I also tried the Think Tank StreetWalker HardDrive V2.0 Professional Photo Backpack but was disappointed by the side pockets. They're basically useless for actual hiking gear if the main compartment is packed. Between those two, the Tenba is tougher for Colorado trails, but honestly neither feels as premium as they should for the money. Just make sure you check the depth specs because the Z9 is a total brick.

^ This. Also, I totally get the struggle with the Z9... its basically a cinder block lol. I was so worried about mine getting banged up when I first started hiking with it because of how much it costs. I've tried a few setups and found two that actually felt safe for a pro body like this.

  • MindShift Gear FirstLight 30L is what I use now and honestly its been great. It was designed for big lenses and gripped bodies so you dont feel like youre forcing the viewfinder into the back panel. Super happy with the padding.
  • Vanguard Alta Sky 51D is another one I looked at. It feels like a tank and has tons of protection, tho it was a bit too bulky for my taste compared to the FirstLight. I stuck with the MindShift because it just felt more secure for long treks. Havent had any issues with zippers or straps failing yet, which is a big win since I'm kinda paranoid about my gear. Good luck with the trip!
