So I finally upgraded to the M11 after years with my old M9 and honestly Im a bit overwhelmed with the changes. The files are gorgeous but I feel like I'm handling a fragile piece of glass rather than a tool and it's driving me nuts. I already managed to get a tiny scratch on the baseplate because Leica decided to ditch the traditional bottom plate which I actually liked... anyway I'm heading to Tokyo in about three weeks and I need to get this thing street-ready fast.

Budget is around $800-1k for everything because I already blew the bank on the body and a 35mm Summicron. Here is what I think I need but I'm getting conflicting info online:

  • A grip that doesn't make it look like a DSLR but actually helps with the weight
  • A screen protector that doesnt mess with the touch sensitivity because I actually use the menus now
  • Fast SD cards that won't choke on the 60MP files (learned that the hard way today)
  • A strap that wont kill my neck after 8 hours of walking

Is the Visoflex 2 actually worth the price tag or should I just stick to the rangefinder? I’m struggling to see the focus sometimes with my aging eyes and the peaking on the screen is okay but not great in daylight. What are you guys actually using day to day? I dont want to buy stuff just for the sake of it but this thing feels unfinished out of the box...

^ This. Also, I totally feel you on the "fragile glass" vibe. I actually had a card failure on my first trip with the M11 because I used an old slow card... it was a total nightmare. The M11 is way more temperamental than the M9 ever was when it comes to write speeds and technical quirks. Since you're heading to Tokyo and worried about that baseplate, I would suggest a few things.

Honestly, the M11 has been a bit of a letdown in terms of build feel compared to the older models. It is way too slippery and the lack of a baseplate makes it feel kinda cheap for the price. I had issues with the camera freezing up constantly until I realized you absolutely cannot cheap out on the memory cards with these high-res sensors. Here is what I ended up getting to actually make it usable for daily shooting:

  • Sony SF-G Tough 128GB UHS-II cards. Do not even bother with slower cards. The 60MP files will literally crash the buffer and you will be standing there like an idiot in the middle of a street in Tokyo waiting for the red light to stop blinking.
  • Leica M11 Handgrip Black. It is overpriced for what it is, but it is the only way to get a solid hold on the thing. Without it, the camera feels unbalanced with a Summicron attached.
  • Peak Design Slide Lite. I tried the fancy leather straps but they just dig into your neck after a few hours of walking. This one is not pretty, but it works.
  • Leica M11 Screen Protector. Unfortunately, the third-party ones I tried messed with the touch response. Just pay the Leica tax here or you will regret it. As for the Visoflex 2... it is not as good as I expected for the money. The resolution is okay, but it drains the battery like crazy and makes the camera look bulky. That said, if your eyes are struggling, it is unfortunately a necessary evil because the rangefinder patch on these newer bodies feels a bit finicky sometimes. It is annoying to have to spend another $700 just to see what you are shooting, but that is basically the M11 experience.
