So I finally pulled the trigger on a Q2 for my trip to Seattle next month and man I'm so stoked to get out there. But holding it today it feels way slicker than I expected coming from my old M10. My logic was just to grab the official Leica thumb grip so the finish matches perfectly but then I started looking at the Match Technical stuff and now I'm second guessing everything.

I've got like 150 bucks set aside for this. The Leica one seems convenient with the button passthrough but I'm worried it might wiggle in the hot shoe over time? Or is there some boutique brand I'm missing that feels more premium? Just want it to feel locked in before I'm out shooting in the rain...

Tbh the Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-SQ2 Brass Grip is the absolute king! I’ve tried the Leica Q2 Thumb Support Black and while the button passthrough is cool, the MT feels way more solid since its carved from brass. No wiggle at all. If you want something cheaper, the Haoge THB-QB Metal Thumb Grip is decent but the finish doesnt match as well. Go brass tho, its amazing!

Building on the earlier suggestion, I have to say that most of these options are pretty underwhelming when you actually look at the tolerances. Unfortunately, I have had issues with the friction-based grips slipping during long street sessions in humid weather. If the fit isnt perfect down to the micron, that hot shoe will eventually show wear or lose its grip.

  • IDS Works Q2 Foldable Thumb Rest
  • Technically interesting because it stays out of the way of the dial, but the hinge is a massive failure point. It develops play way too fast for a 150 dollar accessory. Definitely not as robust as it looks in photos.
  • Lim's Design Leica Q2 Half Case with Grip
  • Honestly, if you want zero wiggle, you need to look at something like this instead. It secures via the tripod mount. Hot shoe grips are inherently unstable for a camera with the Q2s heft, especially if youre walking around all day.
  • Lensmate Leica Q2 Thumb Grip
  • They use a tiny silicone insert to try and dampen vibration and slippage. It works for a bit, but the rubber perishes and then youre back to square one with a loose grip. Ngl, skip the aluminum stuff entirely. If you aren't getting something heavy like brass or a full chassis mount, you're just wasting cash. Its just not worth the risk of it sliding off when things get slippery.
