Which external flash provides the best TTL compatibility for Fujifilm models?

Seriously which external flash actually plays nice with Fuji's TTL system without all the weird inconsistent exposure stuff? I have been shooting professionally for like 12 years now and just made the jump from Sony to a pair of X-T5s for the weight and color but man the flash situation is giving me a massive headache and my first big outdoor wedding with this kit is next Saturday in Seattle. I picked up the Godox V1F because everyone raves about it but half the time the TTL is way off or the HSS just refuses to kick in when I am shooting portraits in the sun.

I have updated the firmware on both the units and the trigger but it is still acting up and I cannot afford to miss shots during the reception. Is the Fujifilm EF-60 the only real way to go for reliability? People say the Nissin i60A is okay but I need something that can handle a full day of work and has fast recycling times because I tend to shoot fast during the couple entrance. My budget is around 500 dollars and I just need something that doesnt make me menu dive every five minutes while I am trying to focus on the bride and groom. Has anyone else run into this with the newer Fuji bodies or am I just missing something obvious...

Honestly, i feel your pain with the Godox system... its great until it isnt. On my X-T5, i finally swapped to the native-ish stuff and ive been much happier with the exposure consistency. The Godox V1 is a beast for power but the TTL communication with Fuji bodies is notoriously flaky sometimes. If you need reliability for next week, check these two out:

  • Fujifilm EF-60 Shoe Mount Flash: This is basically a rebranded Nissin but the firmware is tuned perfectly for Fuji. Since i switched, i havent had those weird overexposure spikes in TTL anymore. It just works well with the X-Trans sensor logic.
  • Nissin MG80 Pro for Fujifilm: This is the heavy hitter. It handles heat way better than the V1F during fast reception shooting and the recycle time is snappy enough for couple entrances. One thing tho... double check if your X-T5 is in mechanical shutter mode. HSS usually wont kick in if youre using electronic shutter, which catches people off guard when they switch from Sony. The EF-60 is definitely your best bet for a set it and forget it experience before your big Saturday gig.
