So I finally pulled the trigger on the Fujifilm X-T5 after everyone hyped it up but honestly im kind of losing my mind right now. I just came from a beefier DSLR and this thing feels like a toy in my hands like I cant even get a good grip on it without my pinky hanging off into space and it makes me feel like im gonna drop it any second. I literally spent my entire savings on this kit for my trip to Tokyo on Thursday and now I realize the battery life is kind of trash compared to what I was used to and the shutter button feels way too recessed or something... I dont know.

I'm actually super stressed because I dont have much money left maybe like 150 bucks tops for extras but I need to make this thing feel like a real tool before I get on that plane. What are the absolute bare minimum essentials I need to fix these handling issues and not run out of juice mid-day?? I was looking at:

  • some kind of L-bracket or grip extension
  • extra batteries (do third party ones explode?)
  • a soft release button thingy

Help me out here because im about to return it if I cant get it to feel right in the next 48 hours. Is there anything else I'm missing that is actually essential for this camera?

TL;DR: Grab the SmallRig grip, some Wasabi batteries, and a cheap soft release button. Youll be totally set for Tokyo for way under your budget. I totally get the toy feeling coming from a heavy DSLR, but honestly, once you bulk it up a bit, it is such a beast. Im super happy with the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Fujifilm X-T5 4136. It adds just enough height so your pinky finally has a home, and it feels way more secure in hand. For juice, dont overthink the expensive OEM ones. Ive used the Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack and Dual USB Charger for Fujifilm NP-W235 for ages and they work well with no complaints. They definitely wont explode lol. Lastly, the VKO Soft Release Button Red 2-Pack Copper makes the shutter feel much more tactile and easy to find. These three things basically fixed all my gripes for under 100 bucks. Youre gonna love shooting in Japan with this setup!

@Reply #5 - good point! Honestly we all feel that anxiety when a new camera feels like its gonna slip right out of our hands. Since you're heading to Tokyo in like two days, you definitely want that thing to feel like an extension of your arm rather than a loose soap bar. I totally agree with the grip idea but if you really want that secure feeling without breaking the bank, try these:

  • Haoge THB-XT5B Thumb Rest for Fujifilm X-T5
  • Seriously a game changer. It gives your thumb a solid place to lock in and suddenly that tiny body feels way more stable for one-handed shooting.
  • SmallRig NP-W235 USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery
  • These are amazing because you can just plug a USB-C cable straight into the battery itself. Super clutch for travel so you dont have to pack a separate wall charger.
  • VKO Wood Soft Release Button
  • I love the feel of wood over the metal ones, feels way more tactile and less cold. If the grip is still too small for your hands, just buy some hockey tape or gaffer tape and add a layer to the front handle. It sounds janky but it adds tons of friction for like 5 bucks! Japan is gonna be incredible for that X-T5, just stick with it and you'll get used to the size.

  • Like someone mentioned, a grip is pretty much required if you have hands that are bigger than a toddlers, though in my experience you gotta be careful with the really cheap ones because they can scratch the bottom of the camera.
  • Extra power is definitely a must for travel, but I've tried many budget brands and some of them tend to swell up over time, so just keep an eye on them when they're charging. Thinking about your Tokyo trip though, it reminds me of when I went back in 2018. I spent more time looking for a specific vintage denim shop in Koenji than actually taking photos. I got so distracted by the street food that I think I ate my weight in yakitori. I actually missed my train back to the hotel because I was trying to win a giant plushie from one of those crane games in Akihabara. Those things are totally rigged, spent like 4000 yen and got nothing but a cheap plastic keychain. My wife was so annoyed she made me carry all the luggage the next day. Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.

Lol I was literally about to post the same thing. Glad someone else brought it up.

To add to the point above: the JJC HG-XT5 Hand Grip adds height for your pinky. I'm satisfied using Nitecore NP-W235 USB-C Batteries because they charge via cable. TL;DR: JJC grip and Nitecore power.

Building on the earlier suggestion, getting a solid grip is honestly the best move for peace of mind. I'm all about reliability when I'm on the road, and having that extra bit of hardware makes the whole setup feel way more rugged and dependable. Actually, talking about Tokyo is making me super nostalgic for my first trip there a few years back. I spent like half my time just getting lost in the subways and ended up in this tiny neighborhood called Shimokitazawa. It had all these incredible vintage clothing shops and little record stores tucked away in every corner. I think I spent way more money on old vinyl than I did on actual food lol. I remember finding this one rare jazz press and carrying it around in my backpack all day terrified I was gonna snap it in half on the crowded trains. The trains there are a whole different level of intense during rush hour, i basically became one with the crowd... Anyway sorry kinda went off topic there lol. You're gonna have a blast!
