Does anyone have a definitive list of must-have travel accessories for the Fujifilm X-T5 because I am leaving for my trip to Tokyo in literally twelve days and I feel like I'm totally unprepared. I spent way too much on the body and the 23mm f1.4 lens so I have maybe $250 or $300 left for the extras but the internet is giving me so much conflicting info. I read that a thumb grip is a game changer for the ergonomics but then I saw a few forum posts saying it makes reaching the back command dial a total pain in the neck and now I dont know if I should bother.

I saw these items mentioned a lot on some gear blogs:

  • Peak Design Leash strap
  • SmallRig baseplate
  • Spare NP-W235 batteries

But that SmallRig plate looks kinda bulky and I'm trying to stay light for walking 20k steps a day. Also I'm super paranoid about the battery life even though people say the new batteries are better than the ones in the X-T3... should I just buy two more originals or is there a specific dual charger that wont fry my camera? I really need to know what you guys actually use on the road like is a screen protector really necessary or am I just overthinking everything? I just dont want to get to Japan and realize I forgot something stupid that ruins the experience. What are the absolute non-negotiables for a two week street photography trip?

Building on the earlier suggestion, are you planning to back up your photos nightly or just shoot to one big card? Since the 40MP sensor eats through storage, I have been very satisfied with SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-II cards for street shooting. Also, grab a Giottos AA1900 Rocket Air Blower. It works well for keeping dust off that sensor when youre walking 20k steps a day.

@Reply #1 - good point! I was so happy with my XT5 in Tokyo. Are you shooting video too?

@Reply #5 - good point! Honestly, if you are hitting 20k steps in Tokyo, every gram counts. I've tried many setups over the years and found that keeping it simple is usually the best move. Since the X-T5 has that high-res 40MP sensor, dust is your biggest enemy. Basically, every tiny speck will show up on your files if you are shooting stopped down.

  • VSGO Camera Sensor Cleaning Kit APS-C
  • Learn to do this yourself before you fly out. It isnt hard and it saves you from ruined shots if a blower wont get the job done. DIY cleaning is a life saver on the road.
  • B+W 58mm Basic UV Filter MRC
  • You spent a lot on that 23mm f1.4 glass. Tokyo is crowded and someone is gonna bump into you in Shinjuku. Much cheaper to replace a filter than the front element.
  • Tenba Tools Cable Duo 4 Pouch
  • This is how I keep my Nitecore charger and all the cables organized so they dont turn into a rats nest in my bag. Id skip the thumb grip if you're already worried about reaching the dials. Tbh, once you get used to the body, you wont even miss it. Just focus on being able to swap batteries fast and keeping that sensor clean.

I am so excited for your Tokyo trip! It is an amazing city for photography and the X-T5 is the perfect companion. Based on my experience shooting in Shinjuku and Shibuya, maintaining high reliability for your gear is paramount when you are walking 20k steps. I have refined my travel kit to be as efficient as possible. To address your concern about ergonomics and power, I highly recommend these specific items:

  • Lensmate Fujifilm X-T5 Folding Thumb Grip
  • Anker 737 Power Bank PowerCore 24K
  • Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap I love using the Lensmate because it provides the extra grip you need without the bulk of a full baseplate. It basically solves the dial access issue because it folds out of the way when you need to change settings. Also, using a high-quality power bank is a total game changer... I just plug the camera in while grabbing lunch and never worry about running out of juice. It is much more reliable than carrying a pocket full of loose batteries!

I'd suggest grabbing one Fujifilm NP-W235 Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery and the Peak Design Leash Camera Strap. Make sure to avoid bulky plates; skipping them saves weight and cash. Lmk if you need anything else!
