Just got my X-T5 for a big trip to Japan next month and I am super hyped but also kinda overwhelmed. I have about 250 bucks left in my budget for extras. I keep seeing people recommend those soft release shutter buttons and thumb grips. I read the thumb grip makes it way easier to hold but then some people say it blocks the back dial or gets in the way of the screen. Also saw some stuff about shutter buttons stripping the threads which sounds scary for a brand new camera.

Since I am gonna be doing mostly street photography what do you guys actually use daily? Should I just stick to:

  • extra batteries
  • a glass screen protector

Is there anything else essential I should grab before I leave...

Congrats on the X-T5. Honestly, for a trip to Japan, you should prioritize reliability over aesthetics every time. Ive seen too many people regret those screw-in soft release buttons after they snagged on a strap and stripped the internal shutter threads. It is a expensive repair that just isnt worth the risk on a brand new body. Same goes for those cheap thumb grips—they often block the rear command dial, which really slows you down when you are trying to change settings quickly during street shooting. Focus your budget on things that actually keep you shooting and protect your gear:

  • Extra power is non-negotiable. Grab at least one Fujifilm NP-W235 Li-ion Battery. The T5 is decent on power but 40MP files and high-res EVF use will drain it faster than you expect.
  • Fast storage is vital. You need something like the SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-II V90 to handle the write speeds for those large files without annoying buffer lag.
  • Screen protection. I always install a ULBTER Glass Screen Protector for Fujifilm X-T5 immediately. It saves the resale value and protects against scratches when the camera is hanging at your side.
  • A secure strap. The Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap is great for street photography because you can adjust the length instantly. Keep it simple. You dont want to be fiddling with loose accessories when you should be looking at the streets of Tokyo. Stick to the basics and see how the camera feels in your hand for a few weeks before you start adding more bulk to it...

To add to the point above: after years of testing different Fuji bodies, I actually disagree with using thumb grips at all. They put way too much leverage on the hot shoe, which isnt meant for that kind of stress. Since youre hitting the streets in Japan, you want something that actually improves the ergonomics of that 40MP sensor setup without blocking your controls. Heres what I actually recommend for a heavy street session:

Tbh generic batteries let me down on my last trip by swelling in the heat. Just buy the official Fujifilm NP-W235 Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery so you dont get stuck.

Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.
