I've been shooting with Fuji for like eight years now so I thought I knew what I was getting into when I swapped my X-T3 for an X-E4 but man the ergonomics on this thing are driving me up the wall. I wanted something sleek for a street project I'm doing in London next month but honestly it feels like holding a wet bar of soap half the time. My logic was that a smaller body would make me more invisible in crowds but now I'm just fumbling with the dials because there is literally nothing to grip onto.

I already tried one of those cheap thumb rests from Amazon but it felt like it was gonna snap my hot shoe off and it blocked the rear command dial which is just a massive design flaw if you ask me. So now I'm back to square one and getting pretty frustrated because I only have about $250 left to spend and the trip is in two weeks. I'm looking for the perfect setup that doesn't completely ruin the rangefinder aesthetic but actually makes the camera usable for 6 hours of walking around.

  • should I go for the official Fuji metal grip?
  • are those wooden baseplates actually helpful or just for show?
  • any thumb rests that don't block the buttons?

Do I go for the official grip or is that just gonna make it as heavy as the X-T series I just sold? I've seen some people rave about the Squarehood stuff but I'm worried it's more about looks than actual function. Also what's the deal with soft release buttons on this model

  • I heard they can mess up the shutter mechanism if you snag them on a jacket? I'm mainly using the 27mm pancake and the 23mm f2 if that matters. Just need something that works for someone with medium-sized hands who is tired of almost dropping their camera every time they try to snap a candid...

The X-E4 ergonomics are honestly pretty poor for street work. In my experience, the Fujifilm MHG-XE4 Metal Hand Grip is essential since it adds a solid Arca-Swiss compatible base without blocking the battery. Pair it with the Lensmate Fujifilm X-E4 Folding Thumb Grip. It has a hinge specifically to allow dial access. Definitely skip the soft releases tho; they increase torque on the shutter stem and can cause mechanical failure if snagged.

Saw this earlier but just getting back to it now. I totally feel you on the bar of soap thing... fuji really prioritized the looks over the feel on the E4. When I first got mine, I actually dropped it on my rug the first day because it just slipped right out of my hand while I was trying to change the battery. It is definitely a different beast compared to the T series. > any thumb rests that don't block the buttons? ^ This. Also, if you want something cheaper than the official fuji metal grip but just as solid, I've been using the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Fujifilm X-E4 3231 for months. It has a built-in silicone pad on the front that actually gives your fingers something to bite into without making the camera feel like a brick. It is way cheaper than the fuji version too, usually around forty bucks, so you'd save a ton of your budget for lens filters or even a nice strap. If you want a more natural feel, the J.B. Camera Designs Pro Wood Grip for Fujifilm X-E4 is actually great. It is handmade wood and adds a nice warmth to the grip that metal lacks. For the thumb rest, look at the Haoge THB-X4B Thumb Rest for Fujifilm X-E4 Black. It has a specific cutout designed so you can still reach the rear command dial with your thumb without it being a struggle. It works well with the 27mm pancake since it keeps the whole package low profile. On the soft release buttons, honestly, be careful. I used to use them but stopped after a friend's shutter button got jammed in his bag. If you really want one, maybe look at a Vancity 10mm Soft Release Button just to try it out, but dont over-tighten it. It is a known weak point on these newer bodies if they get snagged.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I really fell for the minimalist trap with this camera too. Unfortunately, fuji sacrificed way too much for the aesthetic. I tried a few soft release buttons but honestly? They are a total liability. One snagged on my coat pocket and I nearly had a heart attack thinking it ripped the internal mechanism. Just skip them, they arent worth the risk of a repair bill. I found the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for FUJIFILM X-E4 3230 to be much better value than the official one. It is light enough that you wont feel it after a long day in London but it gives your fingers somewhere to actually rest. Since you have the 27mm, definitely grab the Haoge LH-X27W Square Metal Lens Hood for Fujinon XF 27mm F2.8 R WR. It adds zero weight but makes the tiny lens way easier to handle. Also, ditch the neck strap for a Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap... having it tethered to your wrist lets you relax your hand between shots so you dont get that cramp from trying to hold onto a slippery camera all day. Just keep it simple and dont overthink it.
