So I finally swapped my old heavy DSLR kit for an X-E4 because I wanted something way more discrete for street work but I'm actually struggling with the handling way more than I thought I would. I've been shooting street for years but this is my first time with a body this flat and it feels like it's gonna slide right out of my hand when I'm weaving through crowds. I'm taking it on a trip to Chicago in three weeks and I really want to get it sorted before then. My budget is around 250 bucks for whatever I need.

I'm already using the 27mm f2.8 which is great but the lack of a front grip is killing me. I've looked at those thumb rests that go in the hot shoe but I'm worried they might get in the way of the dials or something? Also looking at those wood hand grips or maybe just a really solid wrist strap. I dont want to add too much bulk because the whole point was to have a tiny camera but it just isnt comfortable right now. Does anyone have a specific combo of accessories that makes the X-E4 actually feel secure without turning it into a giant brick?

I almost dropped my first X-E camera in a crowded market because it was just so slippery, so I would be very careful.

Adding my two cents... be careful with the balance since that 27mm is so light. I would suggest checking out the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Fujifilm X-E4 3231 because it adds a nice lip for your fingers without adding bulk. Also, grab a VKO Soft Shutter Release Button Black to help you find the shutter by feel. It makes a massive difference when you're weaving through people. Chicago is gonna be great!

Saw this earlier but just getting to it now. I've spent way too many hours testing ergonomics on the Fuji X series since the X-E1 days. The X-E4 is a weird beast because they stripped it down for aesthetics and basically forgot humans have hands... its gonna feel slippery without some friction. If you want to keep it light but actually feel like you're holding something, dont just grab a generic grip. You need something with specific contact points. Tbh, those wood grips look cool but they sometimes lack the tackiness of rubber or metal. Here is what works best for a technical balance of weight and leverage:

  • Lensmate Fujifilm X-E4 Folding Thumb Rest
  • This is a massive improvement over fixed versions because it swings out of the way of the back dial. It is machined precisely and gives you that extra pivot point for your thumb without blocking the shutter speed wheel.
  • SmallRig L-Bracket for Fujifilm X-E4 3231
  • This adds about 100 grams to the build. It provides a more substantial front grip and includes a built-in Arca-Swiss plate if you ever do long exposures.
  • Hyperion Camera Straps Handmade Acrylic Cord
  • These are super thin and dont get tangled in your bag like the thicker padded stuff. Honestly, the Lensmate is the game changer here. It creates a mechanical pinch between your thumb and the front of the body. Combined with a thin cord strap, it feels locked in even when you're moving fast through a crowd. Chicago gets windy too, so having that extra leverage is huge.
