So I finally snagged a silver X-E4 after hunting for a used one forever and yeah, the rumors are true, it is basically a smooth soap bar. I love the minimalist look but I am legit scared I am gonna drop it when I am walking around. I have been looking at options and I am totally torn between going for a full leather half-case or just a dedicated metal hand grip.

I saw the official Fujifilm MHG-XE4 grip online but it seems kinda pricey for what it is and I read some reviews saying it makes it hard to access the battery door on certain tripod plates? Or maybe that was a different model, I dont know. Then there is the SmallRig stuff which is cheaper but looks a bit too industrial for such a pretty camera. I also checked out those leather half-cases from Gariz and TP but I am worried they do not actually add enough of a bump to help with my grip when I have the 35mm f1.4 attached since that lens is a bit front-heavy compared to the pancakes.

I need to figure this out before my trip to Tokyo in October because I will be doing a ton of street photography and I do not want a hand cramp after two hours of holding it.

My main criteria:

  • Budget: trying to stay under $120 for the whole setup
  • Use case: street photography and heavy travel
  • Must keep the camera relatively slim (no massive cages)
  • Needs to work well with a thumb rest since I already bought one of those

Has anyone tried the wood grips from JB Camera Designs? They look cool but do they actually feel secure or is it just for aesthetics? I am also wondering if a thumb grip alone is enough or if I definitely need the front grip too... what are you guys actually using for your daily carry?

Honestly, i was really disappointed with that official Fujifilm MHG-XE4 Metal Hand Grip. I spent way too much on it and it just feels flimsy for the price. Plus, it totally blocks the battery door if your tripod plate is even slightly wide, which is such a pain. Not exactly what you want when you are out in the field. If you want to save your cash for Tokyo, just grab the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Fujifilm X-E4 3232. Its not as pretty as the leather stuff, but leather cases are not as good as expected for actual handling. They provide almost zero grip when you are using the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 35mm f1.4 R. That lens makes the body front-heavy and you need a real handle, not just a skin. Save the $80 and buy some extra film or ramen instead... your hand will thank you.

> Has anyone tried the wood grips from JB Camera Designs? They look cool but do they actually feel secure or is it just for aesthetics? I have been shooting Fuji for a decade and the X-E4 is definitely their slipperiest body yet lol. I am currently rocking the J.B. Camera Designs Wood Grip for Fujifilm X-E4 and it has been a game changer for my daily carry. It adds just enough of a bump to grab onto without making the camera feel bulky in my bag. Compared to the Fujifilm MHG-XE4 Metal Hand Grip, the wood feels much warmer and more organic for long days of shooting. The Fuji metal one is fine but way overpriced imo. I also messed around with the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Fujifilm X-E4 for a bit. It is super functional but yeah, it looks a bit too industrial for such a sleek camera. For a Tokyo trip, you will love the JB grip... it looks classy and feels rock solid with a thumb rest.

Jumping in with some experience on the X-E series. I have handled almost every iteration and the X-E4 definitely needs that extra surface area for street work. Over the years, I found that mixing a front grip with a thumb rest is the only way to balance heavier glass like the 35mm f1.4.

  • Haoge HG-XE4 Hand Grip for Fujifilm X-E4: This is basically the best value option. It is solid metal and the Arca-Swiss rail is built right into the base so you dont need extra plates. It is way cheaper than the Fuji version and leaves plenty of room for the battery door.
  • SmallRig L-Bracket for FUJIFILM X-E4 3230: You mentioned it looks industrial, but it is actually the most functional for travel. You can remove the side part to keep it slim, and it adds just enough depth to the front for a secure hold. In my experience, leather cases look nice but they often slip on the camera body unless they are bolted down tight. Go with a metal grip if you are walking around Tokyo all day.

Honestly its so frustrating. Ive gone through three different Fuji bodies in the last five years and it feels like they just keep getting smoother and harder to hold with every new release. It drives me absolutely crazy that we have to spend an extra hundred bucks just to make the camera usable for a day of shooting... its like a hidden tax on photographers. You buy this beautiful, minimalist piece of kit and then you have to choose between it being a slippery soap bar or ruining the entire aesthetic with some bulky, overpriced grip that was probably made for five cents in a factory. Most of these accessory brands are just jumping on the hype train too, charging premium prices for stuff that feels cheap or blocks the ports. Its such a scam that the base design is so flawed we have to deal with this at all. I feel your pain man, the struggle to keep that thing in one hand without it sliding away is real and it honestly makes me want to scream sometimes when I see the price tags on these little pieces of metal.
