Ive been flying my Mavic 3 Pro for over a year now and usually I just hand launch or find a flat rock but I got this gig next Saturday at a dusty ranch in West Texas and I know the grit is gonna kill my motors if I try that. My logic was just to grab one of those cheap orange fold-up ones from Amazon but man those things are basically kites. I tried using one yesterday in like 10mph winds and the pegs just ripped right out of the soft dirt and almost hit my props... total nightmare.
I need something that actually stays put without me having to carry a bunch of extra weight in my gear bag. I was looking at those weighted rubber mats but they seem super heavy to lug around all day for a 4 hour shoot and I'm worried about the downward vision sensors getting confused if the pattern isnt high contrast enough for the RTH to lock in. My budget is like 50-60 bucks tops because I already spent too much on extra batteries this month. Does anyone have a specific brand that doesnt flip over the second the prop wash hits it? I keep getting gimbal motor overload warnings when I try to land in the tall grass too so I really need a solid flat surface that actually stays flat...
In my experience, standard mats fail in wind.
> I need something that actually stays put without me having to carry a bunch of extra weight in my gear bag. Building on the earlier suggestion, jumping in here because I've dealt with that West Texas dust too and it's brutal on the Mavic 3 Pro's motors. If you want to avoid those kite-like orange pads but dont want a 10lb rubber mat, check out the HeiyRC Drone Landing Pad 20 inch Weighted Edge. It uses a slightly heavier fabric and a stiffer frame that holds its shape way better when the prop wash hits it. It's usually well under your 60 buck limit too. Another decent middle ground is the NEEWER 30 Inch Drone Landing Pad Double Sided Waterproof. It's large enough that you wont get those gimbal motor overload errors from the grass, and the contrast is sharp enough that the RTH sensors wont get confused. Quick tip for the wind: if the pegs keep ripping out of the loose ranch soil, grab some cheap H&B 12 inch Heavy Duty Galvanized Steel Tent Stakes. The little plastic pegs that come with most pads are useless. These steel ones are cheap, fit in most bags, and actually bite into the ground. Also, if it's really blowing, I just throw a couple of smooth rocks on the upwind corners. Just make sure they aren't tall enough to clip the props during landing... that's a mistake you only make once. Good luck with the ranch shoot, the Mavic 3 Pro is gonna get some killer shots out there.
Quick question: is the ranch soil loose sand or packed? I love the safety of Freewell Drone Landing Pad 2.5ft Hexagon tho! 1. Heavy weighted design
