Ive shot on heavy gear for years but my bulky Manfrotto is killing me now that I switched to an R6. Need a solid carbon fiber travel tripod for this Zion trip.

  • Budget: $300ish
  • Weight: Sub-3lbs
  • Arca-Swiss compatible

Which one actually stays stable in the wind without being a pain to pack? Leaving in two weeks...

Regarding what #3 said about the Vanguard VEO... those are alright but you really want something with beefier leg diameters for those Zion winds! I am a total nerd for specs and there are two options that are absolutely amazing for a mirrorless setup like yours:

  • Innorel RT55C Carbon Fiber Tripod is a total sleeper hit. It weighs only 2.4lbs but has a 26lb load capacity thanks to the 10-layer carbon fiber. The stability-to-weight ratio is just incredible!
  • SmallRig AP-01 Carbon Fiber Tripod is also fantastic and very sleek. It handles the R6 perfectly and fits into almost any carry-on easily. I personally love the Innorel because the leg locks are super weather-resistant, which is huge when you are dealing with that fine red sand. Its basically a tank but weighs next to nothing... definitely what you need for a long hike!

Zion wind is no joke so you might want to consider something without a center column for stability. I would suggest looking at these:

Like someone mentioned, Zion wind is definitely a factor you have to respect. I actually disagree with the idea of using the super thin, 5-section travel tripods that are so popular right now. Even with carbon fiber, those skinny bottom leg sections can act like a spring in high wind. I prefer a DIY modular setup that prioritizes leg diameter over total packed size. You can get a lot more stability by picking up the Artcise AS60C Carbon Fiber Tripod legs. They are very light, around 2.2 lbs, but the 10-layer carbon is surprisingly stiff for the R6. If you pair that with a Sunwayfoto FB-28i Ball Head, you stay well under your 3lb limit and the $300 budget. I generally recommend removing the center column entirely for desert work. It is basically just a giant lever for the wind to grab onto. If it gets really bad, I dont just hang a bag from the hook... I use a small bungee to anchor the apex directly to a heavy rock on the ground. It is a bit more work to set up but it makes the whole thing feel like it is bolted to the canyon floor.

  • Sturdier 4-section legs over 5-section.
  • Low profile head for better center of gravity.
  • Total cost should be around $200. It fits in a standard carry-on just fine if you detach the head. Good luck with the trip, Zion is incredible this time of year.

Just catching up on this thread. If you are heading to Zion soon, you might want to consider these brand options that are a bit more budget-conscious but still reliable for an R6:

  • Sirui T-025SK Carbon Fiber Tripod is incredibly light at only 2.2 lbs. It fits easily in a pack, but be careful using it at full extension. I would suggest keeping the legs at a wider angle if the wind picks up.
  • K&F Concept SA254C1 Carbon Fiber Tripod is a bit taller and weighs about 2.9 lbs. It is very affordable for carbon fiber, though you should make sure to check the tension on the ball head regularly. Sometimes these budget models can creep a bit with a heavy mirrorless setup. Both of these are Arca-Swiss compatible and should keep you under that $300 limit. Just dont forget to hang your bag from the center hook for extra ballast when things get gusty... it really helps with the vibration.
