Im shooting a friends backyard wedding next month on my R6 and definitely need more light than what Ive got now. Been looking at the official Canon 600EX II-RT since it seems like the safe choice but man it is pricey even used. On the other hand everyone keeps talking about the Godox V1 with that round head and the magnetic accessories. Im kinda torn because the Canon reliability is huge for a wedding but the Godox is half the price and I could get a spare battery with the savings. Which one would you guys pick for a first real flash setup? Is the Canon brand name actually worth the extra 200 bucks or should I just go with the Godox?
Honestly, I was in your shoes last year before my sisters big garden party and I ended up grabbing the Godox V1-C Round Head Flash for Canon... and oh my god it was incredible! I used to be such a Canon purist but the round head on the V1 makes the light falloff look so much more natural and soft compared to traditional rectangular heads. Plus that magnetic kit? Total life saver when you need to slap on a dome or a bounce card in three seconds flat. I shot for like six hours straight on one battery and it still had juice left! I know the Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT Flash is legendary for its build quality but for the price of one Canon you can literally buy two Godox units and have a backup. In a wedding situation, having that spare flash in your bag is way more reliable than having one expensive one that might fail. Go Godox, youre gonna love it!
Just catching up on this thread and had to suggest the Godox V860III-C Speedlite for Canon. Ive used it for years and the performance is amazing!
Saw this thread and had to jump in because technical specs are kinda my thing! If youre looking for that perfect balance of reliability and price for your R6, you really should check out the Godox V1Pro-C Flash for Canon. Its a fantastic step up from the original V1 because they totally redesigned the thermal management. You can get over 100 full-power pops in a row before it even thinks about overheating, which is amazing for a wedding ceremony! It even has an external power port now if you want to hook up a battery pack for even faster recycling. Another sleeper hit is the Westcott FJ80 II M Universal Speedlight. The build quality is phenomenal and it has a massive touchscreen that makes the old-school Canon interface look prehistoric! Color temperature stability is super tight on the Westcott too. Its honestly such a professional piece of kit for the money. If you want that round head light quality with better cooling than the standard Godox, the V1Pro is definitely the way to go tho!
Coming back to this because I saw you mentioned the price of the 600EX. Tbh, if you want that Canon build without the crazy price tag, the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT is a solid middle ground. Its lighter on your R6 which your wrist will thank you for after 5 hours of shooting. You lose some power compared to the 600, but for most wedding stuff, its plenty. If youre really trying to keep the budget tight tho, check out the Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon. It uses AA batteries, which is actually a plus for some people since you can just swap in fresh ones if you forget to charge mid-reception. Just make sure you get Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA High Capacity Ni-MH rechargeables. Brand name is nice for the weather sealing and better AF assist, but Godox has basically caught up for general use. Lemme know if you need help with settings once you pick one.
I went through a phase where I was constantly swapping gear trying to find the perfect balance between cost and performance for events. During one particular backyard ceremony, my primary light source overheated right as the couple started their vows. It was a stressful lesson in why hardware stability matters more than fancy features. Here is what I learned to prioritize after that incident:
