Which Tamron lens should I buy for my Nikon Z6II travel setup?

So I finally pulled the trigger on a Z6II and I am so hyped for my trip to Tokyo this October! I have been obsessively looking at the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G2 because everyone says it is the gold standard for a daily driver but then I saw the 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 and now I am second guessing everything.

My logic was that the 28-75 is sharper and obviously better for low light at night in the city but then I read some reviews saying the 28-200 is surprisingly crisp for a superzoom and having that extra reach for street shots or details on temples would be huge. I dont want to be swapping lenses constantly while my wife is waiting for me to keep moving lol. I also looked at the 35-150mm f2-2.8 but that thing looks like a literal brick and is way out of my budget which is around 1100 bucks anyway.

I am really torn because I love the idea of one lens for everything but I dont want to regret the slower aperture when the sun goes down. Is the image quality gap really that noticeable on a 24mp sensor like the Z6II or am I just overthinking the specs? I am trying to keep the weight down too since we will be walking miles every day. Should I stick with the faster f2.8 or go for the range?

Honestly, Tokyo is a marathon. Ive been there three times and trust me, your feet will kill you before your camera does if you carry too much weight. In my experience, for a 24mp sensor like yours, the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD is basically the ultimate travel cheat code. I know youre worried about the aperture, but the Z6II handles high ISO like a champ. Over the years, I have realized that I miss more shots because I couldnt zoom in fast enough than I do because of noise.

  • The 28-200 is actually f/2.8 at the wide end, so you still get that for street shots at night.
  • Having 200mm for those compressed shots of the Tokyo Skytree or detail on a temple roof is something the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 just cant do.
  • Image quality? On a 24mp body, you really wont see the difference unless you are pixel peeping at 400 percent zoom. If you really want the best balance of quality and range though, maybe look at the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S. It stays at f/4 the whole time and is arguably the sharpest lens in its class. But if you want to save money and get that extra reach, the 28-200 is my pick for your trip. Your wife will definitely thank you for not stopping to swap lenses every five minutes lol.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I unfortunately found that superzooms edge sharpness pretty lacking when I tested it tho...
