So Ive been a Nikon shooter for basically forever, started back with the D700 and eventually moved to the Z7ii a couple years ago. I thought I could just live on my old F-mount 85mm 1.4G with the FTZ adapter forever but man, the autofocus is starting to feel slow especially with the new eye-tracking stuff on the mirrorless bodies. Its just not snappy like it should be and I feel like Im missing shots of kids moving around. I have this huge outdoor family session for a high-profile client in like ten days and I realized yesterday during a test shoot that my old lens is hunting way too much in backlit situations. I need something native and I need it fast.
I really want to go the Tamron route because their newer Z glass seems to be getting insane reviews and honestly the Nikon S-line stuff is just so expensive right now. I was looking at that 35-150mm f/2-2.8 because that range is basically cheating for portraits since you dont have to swap bodies, but its also a total brick and I dont know if my wrists can handle that for a 4 hour shoot lol. Then there is the 70-180mm G2 which seems way lighter and maybe better for that long-end compression I like for headshots? Or maybe I should just stick to a prime? Wait, does Tamron even have a dedicated fast prime for Z mount yet that actually competes with the 85mm S? I saw some rumors but I need something I can actually buy today at a local shop or get shipped overnight.
My budget is hovering around $1000 to $1200 max, maybe a bit more if it really changes the game for my workflow. I usually shoot pretty wide open to get that creamy bokeh but sharpness is a must because this client wants large prints for their hallway. I am based in the PNW so the weather is probably gonna be overcast and gray for this shoot, so I need something that handles flat light well without looking muddy. I am just totally stuck between the versatility of the zooms and the potential rendering of a prime if one exists that I am overlooking.
Which Tamron lens is actually the go-to for Z mount portraits right now if you are looking for that professional look without the insane S-line price tag?
Just saw this thread and it reminds me of a wedding I did last fall up in Port Townsend. The sky was that classic PNW gray soup and I was worried about my Z7ii keeping up with the flat light. I actually tested both the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD and the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 for a week before deciding which to keep for the long haul. The 35-150mm is a beast, like truly, the images are stunning but carrying that weight for a four hour session made my shots less stable toward the end. My wrists were just done. I ended up sticking with the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 because it fits your budget better and the vibration compensation is actual magic when the light gets flat and shutter speeds drop. Its been super reliable for me and the 85mm compression you like is right there in the middle of the zoom range.
I tried a bulky zoom for a similar shoot.
