Which Tamron lens is best for wildlife on the Nikon Z8 specifically? Im seriously so over my old F-mount setup with the adapter, its just clunky and the focus hunting on my 200-500 is making me miss shots of the hawks near my house in Oregon constantly.

Its honestly exhausting lugging that thing around. I have about $1300 to spend and need something before my trip to Glacier in three weeks. Is the 150-500mm worth it or does it lose too much light? I just want something that doesnt feel like a workout every time I go for a walk...

^ This. Also, Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD for Nikon Z works well.

  • better balance
  • fits budget f/6.7 isnt a problem because the Z8 handles high ISO noise excellently.

To add to the point above: the weight savings with a native mount are really where you will feel the difference. I used that same 200-500 setup for years before finally switching, and the ergonomics of an adapter just dont compare to a native lens. In my experience, the Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD for Nikon Z is the sweet spot for your budget. Here is the technical breakdown of what you are getting:

  • Light: You drop about half a stop at 500mm (f/6.7 vs f/5.6). On a Z8, that is basically irrelevant because the sensor is so clean at high ISO.
  • Speed: The VXD linear motor is snappy. No more hunting like that old F-mount glass.
  • Portability: It is significantly shorter than your current lens, which makes it way easier to hike with. I wouldnt worry about the f/6.7 too much. For Glacier, you will have plenty of daylight anyway.

The native one I got is totally worth it! My setup is so much faster and lighter now, it makes hiking those Oregon trails a breeze. Youre gonna love the change!
