So I finally pulled the trigger on the Fujifilm X-T5 last month and Im totally in love with the film sims and the handling but now I am stressing about my lens choice for my trip to Italy in three weeks. We are doing Rome then heading down to the Amalfi Coast for some hiking and village hopping and I really dont want to be carrying a massive bag of primes. I have been looking at the Tamron options because the Fuji native glass is just way out of my budget right now since I already spent a lot on the body.
Ive done a decent amount of reading and the two main ones popping up are the 17-70mm f2.8 and that 18-300mm superzoom. I read that the 17-70 is basically the gold standard for sharpness and that constant 2.8 would be amazing for those dimly lit Italian restaurants or cathedrals where I cant use a tripod. But then I see people saying its actually kinda huge and heavy for a travel setup and might feel front-heavy on the X-T5. Plus it doesnt have as much reach as I might want for some of the coastal views.
Then there is the 18-300 which sounds like the ultimate one-lens solution for travel but I keep hearing conflicting things about the 40 megapixel sensor. Some reviews say the lens cant keep up with the resolution and everything looks soft if you crop in at all. I really want to take advantage of that high res sensor for some prints later on so that worries me. My budget is capped at about 800 bucks so I cant really swing both or get the expensive Fuji 16-55.
My main priorities are:
Is the image quality difference between these two really noticeable on the XT5 or is the convenience of the superzoom worth the trade off? Its a tough call because I want those crisp shots but I also dont want to be swapping lenses in the dust while trekking through Positano... what do you guys think for a one-lens travel kit?
> It's a tough call because I want those crisp shots but I also dont want to be swapping lenses... ^ This. Also, you really gotta be careful with that high-res sensor because it is pretty unforgiving. If you go with the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD, you will definitely love the reach for those Amalfi cliffs, but I worry you might find the edges looking a bit muddy when checking those 40MP files later. To summarize the thread, it basically comes down to this:
Italy is incredible but those hills in Positano are no joke. In my experience, if youre rocking that 40MP sensor, you really gotta feed it sharp optics or you're basically wasting that resolution. I've tried many superzooms over the years and while they're convenient, they always leave me wishing I had more detail when I get home to print. I'd definitely grab the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for a few reasons:
TL;DR: Grab a used Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 Di III-A VC RXD. I saved 200 bucks buying mine secondhand and the sharpness is much better for that 40MP sensor.
To add to the point above: everyone is pretty much on the same page about the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD being the winner for that 40MP sensor. I have been using one for a while now and I am incredibly satisfied with how it performs. It is just a more reliable piece of glass when you are shooting in mixed lighting or tight European streets. If you go with the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD, you are basically trading away that sensors potential for some extra zoom range you might not even use that much. Honestly, 70mm is plenty for most village shots in Amalfi. I would much rather have the f/2.8 for the dinner shots and the sharp edges. It is built solid and the VC works well, so you dont have to worry as much about blurry shots in those dimly lit cathedrals. Stick with the 17-70mm, its the safer bet for a big trip where you want the images to actually look professional when you get home.
