I'm finally doing that big trip to Japan I've been putting off for like three years now and honestly I am so stressed about what glass to bring for my A7IV. I want to keep things light because we're gonna be walking like 15 miles a day through Tokyo and Kyoto and I really don't want to be that guy constantly swapping lenses while my girlfriend stands there looking bored. I've been looking at Tamron since their E-mount stuff is usually way lighter than the Sony GM bricks and fits my budget better.
I did some digging and everyone seems to rave about the 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 as the ultimate travel lens because of the versatility. People say it's surprisingly sharp for a superzoom but I'm still skeptical because usually those all-in-one lenses have some major compromises. Then I see other people swearing by the 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 saying it is way better for low light and sharpness especially for night street photography which I plan on doing a ton of in Shinjuku and places like that.
The 28-200 sounds amazing for not having to carry a telephoto but I'm worried it's gonna be a bit of a letdown when the sun goes down or if the bokeh just looks messy for portraits. On the flip side if I go with the 28-75 I feel like I'm gonna miss having that extra reach when I'm looking at temples or something far away across a park and I don't really want to carry a second 70-180mm lens because it just adds weight and bulk to my bag.
My budget is capped at like $850 because the flights were crazy expensive and I'm leaving in three weeks so I need to pull the trigger soon. Is the 28-200 actually sharp enough for 33 megapixels or should I stick to the faster 28-75 and just crop in when I need to? Or maybe the 35-150 is the answer but that thing is way over my budget and weighs a ton from what I can tell.
Really stuck between the convenience of the big zoom range versus the better aperture of the standard zoom for those evening shots. What do you guys think is the better play for a two week trip where I'm mostly doing city stuff and some nature...
Unfortunately, the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lacks the sharpness required for 33MP sensors. Alternatives:
I'd suggest going with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 for a few specific reasons. While that 28-200mm range is tempting, you really gotta be careful with those aperture drops. Once you zoom in even slightly, you are losing light fast. For those night street shots in Shinjuku, that f/2.8 is gonna be your best friend to keep the ISO down and the shutter speed high enough to stop motion. I wouldnt want to risk getting home and finding out half my night shots are blurry or grainy because the lens was too slow. Make sure to consider that you are shooting on a pretty high-res sensor. The 28-75mm is just much more reliable for sharpness across the whole frame compared to a superzoom. If you find yourself needing more reach for a distant temple or something, just use the APS-C crop mode on your Sony Alpha 7 IV. It still leaves you with enough resolution for most things and keeps your kit simple and safe. One practical tip: keep some budget aside for a high-quality filter like the Hoya 67mm Fusion Antistatic Next CIR-PL. It really helps with the glare on foliage and traditional architecture in Kyoto. Also, dont risk your trip on slow storage; grab a Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II 64GB card to handle the data. Its just safer to have one solid, fast lens that you can trust in any lighting condition rather than worrying about the gear failing you when it gets dark.
TL;DR: Grab the superzoom. Tbh I did Japan last year and barely swapped lenses. Are you gonna be shooting mostly handheld at night or do you carry a tripod?
