I'm trying to figure out which Tamron all-in-one to grab for my A7III before I head to Japan next month but I'm honestly just getting more frustrated the more I read. I was pretty set on the 28-200mm f2.8-5.6 since everyone says it's the ultimate travel lens but then I saw some forum posts complaining about the lack of VC and the corners being soft at the long end.

So I was thinking maybe there's a better option for my $750 budget? My logic was that the f2.8 would be great for low light but now I'm second-guessing if I'm missing something. Is the 28-200 really the gold standard for a one-lens setup...

Like someone mentioned, the 28-200 is standard, but honestly, be cautious.

Honestly, just go for the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD. Ive been shooting for years and tried dozens of travel setups, but for a single-lens solution under a grand, nothing touches this one. I took it to Kyoto last year and basically never took it off my camera. People worry about the lack of VC, but your Sony Alpha A7 III has built-in stabilization (IBIS). In my experience, it handles that focal range just fine unless youre trying to shoot at 1/10th of a second at the long end. As for the soft corners... sure, if youre looking at a 400% crop of a brick wall, youll see it. But for real travel photos? Its sharper than it has any right to be.

  • Starting at f/2.8 at the wide end is huge for temples and evening street shots.
  • The weight is perfect for walking 20k steps a day.
  • It focuses way closer than most people realize, which is great for food shots. If you really needed more reach, you could look at the Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD, but thats way over your budget and kinda heavy for casual sightseeing. Stick with the 28-200. Its the gold standard for a reason, regardless of what some people say on gear forums. Youre gonna love having that 200mm reach for those narrow Japanese alleyways. Let me know if you need any filter recs for the trip tho!
