I finally saved up and got my first real camera which is a Sony a6400 and I am super excited to use it for my sisters wedding in Portland next month but the screen on the back is just so tiny and I cant really tell if things are in focus. I saw some people using those bigger screens that sit on top but I got so confused looking them up because there are a million brands and I dont even know how they plug in or if I need special batteries. My budget is pretty tight maybe like 250 dollars since I spent most of my money on the camera and I really dont want to buy the wrong thing. Are there specific ones that work better with Sony or does it not matter?

Congrats on the a6400, its a solid camera but the screen is definitely a weak point for weddings. I have been using external displays for years and it makes a massive difference for checking focus. For 250 dollars, you can get a very reliable setup that works fine with the Sony HDMI output.

  • Look for at least 500 nits of brightness so you can see it outdoors in Portland.
  • Make sure you get a Micro-HDMI to Full HDMI cable specifically since the camera port is tiny.
  • Most budget units like the Feelworld F6 Plus 5.5 Inch 4K HDMI Touchscreen use Sony NP-F970 Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery packs which are industry standard. The Feelworld is a decent option because it includes a tilt arm and supports 3D LUTs if you ever want to preview colors later on. It basically just plugs into the side and works immediately. Focus peaking on a 5.5 inch screen is way easier than squinting at the built-in one while your sisters walking down the aisle.

Check these amazing high-brightness options! They are fantastic for focus:

Like someone mentioned, that extra brightness is gonna be a lifesaver for a wedding. I was also pretty worried about buying the wrong thing when I started, but I am really satisfied with the setup I eventually chose. To summarize the thread so far, you basically need a high-brightness screen and a reliable power source like those NP-F batteries everyone suggested. I ended up going with the Andycine C6 6 Inch 2600nit Ultra Bright Field Monitor because it fits your budget and feels very professional. Here is how I set mine up to ensure everything stays safe and reliable:
