honestly so close to just returning this a7iv because im drowning in all the extra stuff i apparently need just to make it functional for a wedding shoot next month. i spent way too much on the body alone and now every video i watch says i need like three different grips and specific high speed cards or the thing just overheats and dies on me. im mostly doing handheld event work in chicago so i need to stay mobile but the battery life is just straight up depressing compared to my old dslr and the ergonomics are giving me hand cramps after twenty minutes.
my budget is basically tapped out but i can maybe swing another 400 bucks if it actually fixes these headaches. here is what i absolutely need to figure out:
im just really overwhelmed with the options and dont want to waste more money on junk that doesnt work. what are the absolute bare essentials i need to actually survive a 10 hour day with this camera without losing my mind?...
I was so terrified of my camera dying during my first big event! Honestly, the A7IV is amazing but you gotta be careful with gear tho.
just found this thread. @Reply #1 - good point! honestly you need to be very careful with memory card choices for weddings because the a7iv writes a massive amount of data in 10-bit. i would suggest the Kingston Canvas React Plus 128GB V90 SDXC because it offers 260MB/s sustained write speeds. you might want to consider skipping v60 cards for the primary slot to avoid the buffer clogging up during the kiss or the grand entrance... that lag can be a career killer. on the ergonomics front, the body is definitely tight for larger hands. make sure to look at the SmallRig L-Bracket for Sony Alpha 7 IV 3660. it extends the grip surface just enough for your pinky to actually rest on the camera which reduces that hand cramp significantly. for power, i really caution against using third-party batteries for weddings. the a7iv can be incredibly sensitive to voltage fluctuations and you dont want the unsupported battery warning popping up when the bride is walking down the aisle. i would suggest sticking to the official Sony NP-FZ100 Rechargeable Battery Pack. finally, regarding the strap, the Peak Design Slide Camera Strap is basically the industry standard for a reason. it distributes weight across your shoulder much better than the stock one ever will. stay cautious with your budget tho, those v90 cards eat up your 400 bucks pretty fast.
Unfortunately the ergonomics on these mirrorless bodies is kinda trash compared to old DSLRs. I had issues with my pinky hanging off the edge... it gets painful fast. To stay under budget:
Exactly what I was thinking
Same setup here, love it
