My audio on my Sony A7iv is driving me absolutely nuts. I have this huge wedding shoot in Chicago coming up in like two weeks and I still havent picked a mic.

I looked at the Rode VideoMic Pro+ because everyone swears by it but then I saw the Sony ECM-B1M which uses that digital shoe thing. People say the Sony one is great because no cables but then others say the internal preamp on the Rode is way better for cutting out that annoying background hiss. I'm honestly just staring at my screen getting more frustrated by the minute lol. My budget is strictly under 350 bucks. Which one actually works better for fast run and gun stuff where you cant mess with settings every five seconds?

Look, if youre shooting on an A7iv, stop overthinking the hiss issue. In my experience, the digital signal path on the Sony mics completely bypasses the cameras analog preamp anyway. For run and gun wedding stuff, you want zero cables to snag on your gear. I have tried many setups over the years and here is why the Sony digital shoe wins for your budget:

  • Sony ECM-B10 Digital Shotgun Microphone is basically the B1M lite and saves you about a hundred bucks.
  • No internal batteries to worry about since it pulls power directly from the shoe.
  • Three switchable pickup patterns which is huge for switching between the vows and the noisy reception. Honestly, the Rode VideoMic Pro+ Shotgun Microphone is a tank but the cable is just another failure point you dont need. Grab the B10 and save the extra cash. The digital connection is just objectively cleaner and way faster for your workflow when things get crazy.

^ This. Also, skipping cables saves money on gear.

  • Im happy with the lower noise floor on digital.
  • Not sure, but I think it handles high SPL better during receptions...
