so i just bought that sony zv-1 ii camera because everyone says its the best for vlogging and i want to start making videos of my trips to different coffee shops around chicago but honestly the sound is just... bad? like i tried filming at this busy cafe yesterday and you can barely hear me over the espresso machine and people talking in the back. i thought the little fuzzy thing on top would fix it but it didnt do much. i have no idea where to start with actual microphones and honestly im a bit scared i'll buy something that doesnt even plug in right. i keep seeing stuff about shotgun mics and then these little clip on things but i dont know which one is better for just holding the camera and talking to it.

my budget is probably around $150 because i already spent way too much on the camera itself and i need to figure this out before i go to seattle next month for my first real travel vlog. sorry if this is a super basic question but do i need a battery for these? or do they just work when you plug them in? what should i actually buy so i dont sound like im underwater...

> i thought the little fuzzy thing on top would fix it but it didnt do much. Unfortunately, that internal mic array is pretty underwhelming for anything beyond a silent room. Its not as good as expected despite Sony marketing the three-capsule design as a premium feature. The problem is the polar pattern is way too wide, so it picks up all that cafe reverb and ambient noise easily. You definitely need a directional shotgun mic to isolate your voice. I had issues with cheaper clones in the past, so I'd stick with something reliable. I recommend the Rode VideoMic GO II Lightweight Directional Microphone. It runs on plug-in power from the camera 3.5mm jack, so no batteries to worry about. The high-quality condenser capsule has much better sensitivity and a tighter pickup pattern than the stock Sony setup. It basically makes sure the focus stays on your voice rather than the grinder behind you. Just make sure the gain settings in the camera menu arent set to auto...

Saw this earlier but just getting back. Shotguns often struggle in loud shops because the polar pattern picks up room reflections. You want a wireless setup to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. The Rode Wireless ME Compact Wireless Mic System is solid and fits your budget. It has internal batteries, so you just charge via USB. For technical deep dives on noise floors, check out Julian Krause on YouTube... he is the king of audio data.

No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
