I'm honestly so fed up trying to use the back screen on my Sigma fp L. It's basically a mirror in any kind of daylight and since it doesn't tilt I'm literally laying in the dirt trying to frame shots for my landscape stuff here in Seattle. My logic was that a small camera would be easy to rig up but that micro-HDMI port is a joke and feels like it's gonna snap every time I plug in my old cheap Lilliput. Plus the lag is just killing me.
I was thinking about the Atomos Shinobi because it's light but then I read some threads saying it sucks the fp L battery dry or gets way too hot after twenty minutes. Then I considered a PortKeys because I heard you can control camera settings through the monitor but apparently the UI is super buggy? My budget is capped at around $600 since I already wasted money on the EVF-11 which I ended up hating because it's so bulky and awkward for the way I shoot.
I just want something that:
Has anyone actually found a monitor that works reliably with this specific body without making the whole setup feel like a fragile science experiment...
Unfortunately, the fp series has some of the most frustrating ergonomics I've ever dealt with. I love the image quality, but that micro-HDMI is a total nightmare. I had issues with three different cables just falling out mid-shoot before I finally bit the bullet and bought a cage. You absolutely need something like the SmallRig Cage for Sigma fp Series 2518 with a dedicated cable clamp, or you're gonna snap that port off eventually, no joke. As for monitors, I tried the Atomos Shinobi 5.2-inch 4K HDMI Monitor and was pretty disappointed. It gets way too hot in direct sun and the plastic build feels kinda cheap for the price. If you want to save some cash and actually see your frame in Seattle daylight, the FeelWorld LUT5 5.5 Inch 3000nit Ultra Bright Field Monitor is surprisingly decent for a budget option. It’s stupidly bright... 3000 nits is overkill but honestly perfect for outdoor landscape stuff. The UI is a bit clunky compared to the high-end stuff, but it gets the job done without the massive lag of the old Lilliput gear. Another solid pick if you can find a deal is the SmallHD Action 5 5-inch 2000nit HDMI Monitor. It feels more pro and the color is way more accurate than the cheaper brands, tho it’s not quite as bright as the FeelWorld. Sadly, just dont expect the fp L to stay small once you rig it properly to be usable... it's a bit of a trap.
^ This. Also, the PortKeys LH5P II 5.5 Inch 2200nit Monitor is probably your best bet for the money. Its plenty bright for landscape work and the build is fairly rugged.
Ive spent some time looking into the fp L signal architecture and you really need a robust OS to handle that 12-bit latency. The brand SmallHD is your best bet for UI stability and 1000+ nit brightness.
To add to the point above: everybody is spot on about needing a cage. Honestly, it is such a letdown that Sigma didn't just put a full-sized HDMI on this thing... it makes the whole experience feel way more fragile than it should be for a pro-level sensor. I've had issues with signal drops constantly until I locked everything down. Since you've already tried the cheap stuff and hated the lag, maybe check out the Blackmagic Video Assist 5 inch 3G. I have found the connection way more stable than the Shinobi, and the OS is actually intuitive instead of feeling like a buggy science project. If you are really worried about the Seattle gray and want something cheaper than SmallHD, the Feelworld LUT5 5.5 Inch 3000nit is actually bright enough to see in direct light, tho the fan can be a bit loud if you are doing video. Quick tip: grab a Kondor Blue Coiled Micro HDMI to Full HDMI cable. Most of the lag and flicker people complain about usually comes from those thin generic ribbons. Just dont expect the fp L battery to stay alive for long if you're pushing a high-nit screen... it’s kinda the price we pay for the tiny form factor I guess.
Late to the party but honestly the fp L is such a letdown for professional workflows. The micro-HDMI has pathetic signal integrity and the latency issues are basically baked into the architecture. Unfortunately, what you read on official spec sheets doesnt match the actual performance bottlenecks you see in the field. I saw a really detailed technical breakdown on YouTube recently that measured the exact frame delay for basically every screen on the market using the fp L body. Just search for 'Sigma fp L external monitor lag test' and it is like the first or second result. It has all the data charts and refresh rate info you actually need. TL;DR: Search YouTube for 'Sigma fp L monitor latency comparison' to see the actual millisecond data before wasting more money.
+1
@Reply #5 - good point! Honestly, I am right there with you and it is just so disappointing how these companies treat us. I have been having the exact same issues with my setup for months and it drives me crazy that we pay thousands for a pro sensor only to get a connector that feels like it belongs on a toy from 2010.
Good to know!
