so i just got this sigma fp because it looked small and cool but now i realize it doesnt even have a grip or anything lol. i have no idea where to start with all the bits and pieces people talk about online. i want to use it for taking photos of my dog and maybe some videos when i go to colorado next month. i spent almost all my money on the body so i only have like 200 dollars left for extras.

can you guys help me figure out what i actually need?

  • something to hold it better
  • maybe extra power since i heard the battery is tiny
  • do i need a cage?

sorry if this is a dumb question but i really dont know what im doing here...

Honestly, the fp is such a pain to hold without help. I was pretty disappointed with how slippery it feels out of the box, especially for the price. Sigma really should have included a basic grip. Since you're on a budget, you gotta be smart. Definitely skip the official Sigma accessories; they cost way too much for what they are. I had issues with my hand cramping until I picked up the SmallRig HG-11 Handgrip for Sigma fp. It's way more cost-effective than the Sigma version. Also, the battery is basically a joke and wont last an hour of video. Pick up a Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack for Sigma BP-51 so you arent stuck with a dead camera in Colorado. TL;DR: Forget the cage for now. Grab the SmallRig grip and extra batteries to stay under your 200 dollar limit.

For the grip situation, just check out whatever SmallRig has in stock right now. They make amazing stuff that doesnt break the bank! Honestly, their grips feel fantastic and make the camera actually usable for hiking. Youll definitely want a cage eventually too, basically anything from that brand is gonna be a solid bet for your Colorado trip!

Are you planning to do mostly handheld shooting or will you have a tripod with you for the landscapes? Also, are you looking at getting a cage because you want to attach things like mics and monitors for the video stuff, or is it more for extra protection while you're hiking? That 200 dollars can disappear pretty fast so knowing if you actually need a bunch of mounting points or just a basic way to hold the thing would help narrow it down. Honestly, the fp is a weird shape so getting the ergonomics right for your specific hand size is kinda key.
