I just got the Sigma fp and man I am stressing out because it is literally just a box and I have a wedding shoot in like two weeks in Chicago. I didnt realize how much extra stuff I would need just to hold the thing comfortably. Im staring at my cart right now and I cant decide if I should go for the full SmallRig cage setup with the wooden handle or if the 8Sinn cage is actually better for keeping it compact? The SmallRig one is cheaper which is good because I only have about $350 left in my gear budget for this month but I heard the 8Sinn fits the body lines better and doesnt block the buttons as much.
Also I am really torn on the viewfinder situation. The EVF-11 is so expensive but people say its essential for outdoor stuff. Should I just bite the bullet and get that or would I be better off getting a cheap Feelworld monitor and a bunch of extra batteries? The battery life on this thing is honestly terrifying me and I dont want to be swapping every 20 minutes during the ceremony. I need a rig that wont fail me but also wont break my back or my bank account. Here is what I am looking at:
Which way should I go if I need to be ready by next Friday? I really want to love this camera but right now it just feels like a puzzle I cant solve...
> SmallRig vs 8Sinn for handheld ergonomics Just saw this thread and thought id mention the budget aspect. If you only have $350 left for the whole rig, you really gotta prioritize power and visibility first. Id suggest going with the SmallRig Cage for Sigma fp Series 3211 since it is way more budget friendly than the boutique brands. It gets the job done for a wedding without eating your whole wallet. Be careful with the monitor choice tho... outdoor ceremonies in the sun are a nightmare for the built-in screen. Instead of that expensive EVF, check out the Desview R6 UHB 5.5 Inch Touchscreen Monitor. It is 2800 nits which is bright enough to see in direct daylight without a hood. For the SSD, the SmallRig Universal SSD Holder BSH2343B works well with a Crucial X9 Pro 1TB Portable SSD. Just make sure you buy a few sets of the Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack and Dual Charger for Sigma BP-51. You definitely dont want to be hunting for a charger mid-reception. You got this!
Man, i remember my first big gig with the fp... absolute chaos because i tried to shoot without a real grip. Honestly, for a wedding next week, i would suggest the SmallRig Sigma fp Cage 2518. I have used both, and while the 8Sinn Cage for Sigma fp is sleek, the SmallRig just handles the abuse of a long day better and leaves you cash for batteries. Speaking of power, be careful with the monitor route. The Sigma EVF-11 Electronic Viewfinder is great for sun, but itll blow your whole budget. I usually tell people to grab a Feelworld F5 Pro V4 5.5 Inch Touch Screen Monitor and a sunshade instead. Just make sure to get a SmallRig Universal Holder for External SSD BSH2343 for your drive. I once had a cable snag during a reception and it almost ruined the drive. Stick to the cheaper cage and buy extra juice.
I've been using the Tilta Full Camera Cage for Sigma fp Black for a year now and honestly it is the most solid option if you want something that wont wiggle. For a wedding, you really need a stable point of contact. Instead of the expensive electronic finder, I am very satisfied with the Sigma LCD Viewfinder LVF-11. It is a huge piece of glass that magnifies the screen. It works perfectly in direct sunlight and helps stabilize the camera against your face when you are shooting handheld. To solve the battery anxiety without spending a fortune, look at the SmallRig NP-F Battery Adapter Plate Lite 3018. You can bolt it to the cage, pop on a cheap NP-F battery, and it will last you nearly the whole day. Pair that with a Samsung T5 Portable SSD 1TB and the SmallRig Mount for Samsung T5 SSD 2245B to keep your cables secure. This setup is way more reliable than swapping tiny internal batteries every few minutes.
No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
> The battery life on this thing is honestly terrifying me and I dont want to be swapping every 20 minutes during the ceremony. Honestly, I felt the same way when I first got mine. To add to the point above: I once had a cheap monitor die right in the middle of a key moment and it was a total nightmare. For a high-stakes wedding, you really want to minimize points of failure. Monitors chew through those tiny batteries so fast you wont even see it coming... I would suggest looking at the Sigma LVF-11 LCD Viewfinder instead. It doesnt use any power at all because it is just optics, and it makes the screen perfectly visible even in that harsh Chicago sun. For the cage, just go with the SmallRig Cage for Sigma fp 2518. It is sturdy enough that you wont worry about it falling apart. I once bumped my rig against a door frame and that cage saved the body from a nasty dent. Also, definitely grab at least four or five Sigma BP-51 Li-ion Battery packs. Its better to have them and not need them than to have your camera go dark right as they kiss. If you are worried about the SSD, the SmallRig SSD Mount Bracket 2245B is basically a tank for holding your drive in place. Stay safe and good luck with the shoot!
