finally got my hands on a sigma fp and im so hyped to start rigging this thing out for a documentary im shooting in portland next month! ive been looking at the smallrig ones since they are everywhere but i keep seeing mixed reviews about the fitment and whether it blocks the ports or not. then i saw the tilta kit which looks sick with the cooling fan but honestly thats way out of my budget and i dont know if i really need it?

im looking for:

  • budget under $150
  • needs a decent grip since the camera is tiny
  • solid cable clamps for the ssd
  • top handle compatibility

does anyone know if the 8sinn version is worth the extra cash over the smallrig? just want something thats not gonna wiggle when im handheld...

To add to the point above: what kind of SSD are you planning to run for the Portland shoot? Drive size matters for the clamp fit. If you want to stay under $150, here's the data:

I jumped on the Sigma fp train last year and honestly, you gotta be careful with how you rig this thing. I once used a generic cage on a doc shoot in Seattle and the whole thing started twisting because it only had one mounting point on the bottom... total nightmare when you're trying to pull focus. If you're worried about the wiggle, I'd suggest looking at the SmallRig Cage for Sigma fp Series CCM2518 but you absolutely must pair it with the SmallRig HDMI and USB-C Cable Clamp 2671. Without that clamp, you're basically asking for a broken port if that SSD cable gets snagged on your gear or a jacket zipper. Regarding the 8sinn, it feels way more premium than the cheaper stuff. I tried the 8Sinn Cage for Sigma fp / fp L and the fitment is tighter, like it's actually part of the camera body. It doesn't have that budget flex. However, for your budget, the SmallRig is probably the safer bet to leave room for a handle. Just make sure to double-check the screw tightness every morning. I've seen these things vibrate loose after a long day of handheld work. Also, if you're doing a doc, consider the SmallRig Top Handle with Cold Shoe 1638 for that low-angle stability. It's basic but it won't fail you. TL;DR: Go with the SmallRig Cage for Sigma fp Series CCM2518 to save money for accessories, but be religious about using a cable clamp so you don't fry your ports mid-shoot.
