My arms are literally killing me after trying to handhold my Sigma 150-600mm all weekend at the local wetlands. Its way too heavy and my shots are all blurry anyway. I spent hours looking at the Manfrotto MT055 and some Benro carbon fiber ones online but the reviews are all over the place. Some guys say the Manfrotto is rock solid but others say the center column makes it shake like crazy with a long lens. I only have about $300 to spend before my trip next Friday and I dont want to waste money on something that's just gonna tip over.

What actually works for this beast of a lens without costing a fortune?

Coming back to this... honestly I had a scary moment years ago where a flimsy setup nearly face-planted my gear into the mud. You gotta be careful with center columns because they act like a tuning fork at 600mm. For that heavy Sigma, I would suggest these instead:

  • Innorel RT80C Carbon Fiber Tripod: This is basically a tank. Since it has no center column, the stability is miles better than the Manfrotto 055. Its cheap but solid. Downside is it feels a bit generic and bulky to carry around.
  • Sirui AM-284 Carbon Fiber Tripod: Much better if youre hiking. It is lighter but make sure to use the weight hook because it can get top-heavy with that lens setup. I really think you should avoid the aluminum Manfrotto MT055. Its way too heavy for long walks and that column is just a weak point for long glass.

I've learned the hard way that 600mm shows every vibration. I once used a flimsy setup in some light wind and my eagle shots looked like blurry paintings... real mess. For your budget:

That Sigma is a total workout for the arms, I get it. For under $300, these two options are solid:
