finally got my hands on a dp2 Quattro for my street photography trip to Japan next month!!! super stoked but the battery is honestly a joke lol. i saw the official Sigma grip but it looks way too bulky for my bag and some ebay ones seem hit or miss... what are you guys actually using to keep this thing alive all day?

I've tried many, and Watson BP-51 Li-Ion Battery Pack cells have better cycle life than generics. Just pocket three spares; it's way more practical for street shooting in Japan than a grip.

Just caught this thread. If youre trying to keep costs down while avoiding the bulk of a full grip, you might want to consider going the dummy battery route instead. Be very careful with those generic eBay grips because the tolerances on the battery door pins can be hit or miss, and I've heard reports of them stripping the tripod socket. I would suggest looking at Wasabi Power BP-51 Li-ion 2-Pack for a budget-friendly way to triple your runtime without the extra weight; they usually clock in at 1400mAh which is decent for the price. If you want a more permanent power solution for street photography, maybe check out a Gonine SAC-6 AC Power Adapter Kit used with a small 5V USB to 8.4V DC converter cable. Its way more cost-effective than buying the official gear. Just make sure to use a high-quality power bank so you dont risk voltage spikes on that sensitive Quattro sensor. Ive seen some cheap cables cause flickering in the LCD because they dont maintain a steady 8.4V output, so definitely test your setup before heading to Japan.

Been shooting the Quattro series for years and honestly the Sigma PG-41 Power Grip is the only one that doesnt feel like a toy, even if its bulky. If thats too big for your bag, just grab a few extra Sigma BP-51 Li-ion Battery units instead. Third-party eBay grips often have contact issues which is a total pain in the field.

ngl the battery situation is just depressing with these cameras. i remember trying to rig up a weird external power bank thing for a trip to the coast last summer, thinking i was being clever.

  • the cables kept snagging on my jacket
  • the connector pin felt like it was gonna snap off every time i put it in my bag
  • ended up missing a killer sunset because the unit just died for no reason it was a total mess and unfortunately it just ruined my mood for the whole afternoon. i ended up spending the rest of the trip looking for cool vintage lenses in local thrift stores instead of actually shooting. i found this amazing old manual glass that had some fungus but the flare was incredible in the weirdest way... it basically turned every light source into a dream sequence. i guess i just like the hunt for gear more than the actual usage sometimes. anyway. just be careful with the knockoff stuff, it usually isnt as good as expected. but yeah.
