So I just grabbed a Sigma fp for a street photography trip to Tokyo next week and I am panicking a bit about what I actually need to make it usable. I saw everyone online saying the SmallRig cage is a must-have but that kind of defeats the purpose of buying the worlds smallest full frame camera right? Like my whole logic was keeping it tiny for the plane and walking around but now I am seeing people say the ergonomics are a nightmare without a grip. I looked at the LVF-11 too but its so bulky... I only have like 200 bucks left in the budget after buying the body and I need to know if I should just get extra batteries or if a grip is actually mandatory to even hold the thing properly without dropping it on the sidewalk...
dont buy the cage if you want it small. it totally ruins the vibe of the fp for street stuff. i would suggest being very careful with those full rigs because they add way too much weight for a trip where youre walking ten miles a day. you might want to consider just getting a tiny grip instead. the Sigma HG-11 Large Hand Grip is basically essential if you dont want it slipping out of your hand, but it keeps the profile slim and doesnt turn it into a tank. the biggest thing to watch out for is the battery life though. its honestly pretty bad. like, you will be dead by lunch if you only have one. since youre on a budget, i wouldnt waste money on the official sigma ones. i usually go with something like the Wasabi Power BP-51 1400mAh 2-Pack since you get two for a fraction of the price. just make sure to carry them in a pocket so they stay warm if its chilly. skip the LVF-11 for now. its huge and makes the camera look like a weird brick. i would suggest just getting a cheap screen protector and maybe a decent wrist strap. if you have money left, definitely grab a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB UHS-I V30 SDXC so you arent waiting for the buffer to clear while some cool scene passes you by. seriously, just keep it simple or you wont even want to take it out of your bag...
Ive spent years testing different setups and stayed happy with these:
Any updates on this?
> my whole logic was keeping it tiny for the plane and walking around honestly people overthink the grip thing way too much. in my experience you can just get used to the flat body if you hold it right. i've tried many setups and honestly... just go on youtube and search for sigma fp minimal street setup or check the fp subreddit. there are tons of guys showing how to use it barebones. just look it up and save your cash so you dont go broke in tokyo.
Ok adding this to my list of things to try. Thanks for the tip!
