What external monitor should I buy for my Panasonic Lumix because I am honestly so lost right now. I just got a Lumix S5II and the screen on the back is just so tiny and I can barely see if I am even in focus or not when I am recording myself for my new cooking channel. I keep hearing about things like Atomos and Feelworld but honestly I have no idea if they even connect or if I need a special cable or something? I am really sorry if this is a super basic question but I am totally new to video stuff and the more videos I watch on youtube the more confused I get. My budget is probably around $250 or maybe $300 if it is really worth it but I dont want to buy something that is gonna break or not talk to the camera properly. Also I am in Chicago and hoping to find something I can just pick up at a store this week before my first big shoot on Saturday. Do I need a specific HDMI cable or does it come with one? I am worried about the lag too because I heard some monitors have a delay and that would drive me crazy. Is there like a gold standard for Lumix users that isnt like a thousand dollars...
Just logged in and saw this thread! I am totally obsessed with my S5II and went through this same panic last month!! It is such an amazing piece of gear but the menus can be a lot at first. Since you are worried about things being fragile, the best advice I got was to stick to full-size HDMI stuff because those tiny micro ports break way too easily. Luckily our camera has the big port already! For your budget, you really gotta look at the Portkeys PT6 5.2 Inch 4K HDMI Touchscreen Monitor. It is honestly fantastic and way cheaper than the big name brands, usually like 160 bucks. It even comes with a protective case and a sunshade so you dont have to worry about it getting banged up in your kitchen! If you need a bigger screen because you are standing far back while cooking, the Feelworld LUT7 7 Inch 2200nit High Brightness is a total beast. It is so bright you can see it from anywhere even if you have bright studio lights on your food. I highly recommend checking out the Lumix Live channel on YouTube. They have a whole video on external monitors for the S5II that helped me stop worrying about lag and settings. For the cable, since our camera uses the big HDMI port, just grab a SmallRig Ultra Slim 4K HDMI Cable 55cm. It is super flexible and wont put stress on the camera port. You can probably find these at a local shop like Helix Camera in the city or maybe even some Best Buys carry the basic cables. You got this!!
> What external monitor should I buy for my Panasonic Lumix because I am honestly so lost right now. Ive shot with Lumix for a decade and the S5II is a solid choice for a cooking channel. For a budget under $300, you have two very specific paths.
Been using this for years, no complaints
Regarding what #4 said about "Been using this for years, no complaints" - thats really the best way to be. I felt the same way once I finally settled on the Desview R6 UHB 5.5 Inch 2800nits Touchscreen Monitor for my S5II. I was looking at the bigger names too but this one has been rock solid for me and the brightness is actually better than some of the pricier options. It makes such a difference when you are trying to check focus while moving around a kitchen. Quick tip tho: definitely get a cage like the SmallRig S5II Camera Cage 4022 eventually if you want to mount the monitor securely. It makes the whole rig feel way more professional and less like things are gonna snap off. Since you are in Chicago, I think there is a Procam location in the area that might have these in stock. I have had zero issues with lag using the standard cable it came with. You are gonna love having a bigger screen, it is a total game changer for self-recording.
Regarding what #2 said about 'Just logged in and saw this thread! I...', I felt that panic too. I had the same focus struggle filming my sourdough tutorial... I ended up getting the Portkeys PT6 5.2 Inch 4K HDMI Touchscreen Monitor and honestly its been a lifesaver. No complaints about lag at all. I use a SmallRig HDMI to HDMI Cable 4K and it stays snug. Really happy with how easy it was to set up.
