What is the best external microphone for Panasonic Lumix cameras?

What is the absolute best external mic I can get for my Lumix cameras right now because my old setup is just not cutting it anymore? I've been shooting on the GH series forever—started with the GH4 and just moved up to the GH6—so I'm pretty familiar with the ecosystem and how to tweak the internal gain settings to keep the noise floor low. But man, I just started prepping for this documentary I'm filming in Portland next month and my old Rode VideoMic Pro is giving me so much hiss it's driving me crazy.

I dont know if the preamps in the GH6 are just more sensitive or if my mic is finally dying on me after five years of heavy use. I'm looking for something that really complements the Lumix sound profile without needing a ton of post-processing. I've got a budget of about $400 and I'm looking at maybe the Sennheiser MKE 600 or the newer Deity stuff but I'm worried about the size and weight on my gimbal. Has anyone tried the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 adapter? Is it worth the extra bulk over just a 3.5mm shotgun? I really need something that can handle outdoor wind better than what I've got since I'll be doing a lot of street interviews and I'm super hyped to get this project started but this audio issue is the one thing holding me back right now...

Saw this earlier! Grab the <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+400+Compact+Shotgun+Microphone&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 400 Compact Shotgun Microphone! Its amazing and super reliable. Check B&H used section to save cash... seriously a gimbal lifesaver imo!

Honestly, since you moved to the GH6, the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 XLR Microphone Adapter is the move. It completely eliminates that annoying 3.5mm hiss.

  • Deity V-Mic D3 Pro Shotgun Microphone: Super compact and has a better shock mount than old Rodes. Go the XLR route if you can handle the extra weight... it just sounds way cleaner.

Unfortunatly, 3.5mm preamps often underperform. Ive had issues with the Rode VideoMic NTG High-performance Shotgun on gimbals, but its just okay.

  • Variable gain dial
  • Auto-sensing output

Saw this thread and had to jump in. Ngl, the struggle with 3.5mm preamps is real, even on the GH6. If you're worried about reliability for a documentary, you might wanna look at the Shure VP83F LensHopper Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone with Integrated Flash Recording. Ive used this on a few projects and its basically built like a tank. The F version is the one you want because it has a built-in microSD recorder. That saved my life once when a cable went bad mid-shoot... you still have a high-quality backup track recorded directly on the mic itself. Its super compact so it wont throw off your gimbal balance like a long shotgun would. For the Portland wind, the standard foam cover isnt gonna cut it tho. Get the Shure A83-FUR Windjammer to go with it. Its a bit of an extra cost but honestly, for street interviews, its a necessity. It handles the low-end rumble way better than the old Rodes in my experience.
