Honestly pretty annoyed right now because I just upgraded from my GH5 for a shoot in Seattle next Tuesday and the battery on this GH6 is absolute garbage compared to what I expected plus the thing gets so hot recording 5.7K ProRes. Ive got about $400 left in the budget, what are the absolute must-have accessories to keep this thing running smoothly?

Ive seen this happen so many times on long docu sets... the heat is a total nightmare until you switch power sources. Quick question tho, are you shooting handheld or on a tripod for this Seattle gig? Honestly, if you can mount it, just get an Anker 737 Power Bank PowerCore 24K for USB-C power. It stops the internal battery from cooking the sensor during long takes.

@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly tho, in my experience, just carrying a mountain of spares gets expensive and kinda messy. I remember a shoot a couple years back where I was swapping batteries every 40 mins and I ended up losing track of which ones were actually charged... basically almost ruined the whole day because the camera cut out right in the middle of a key moment. Since then, I've been way more conservative about how I power my kits.

  • Are you shooting mostly handheld or will you have a rig/tripod setup?
  • How long are your typical takes gonna be for this specific gig? I've found that the heat issue is way worse if you're doing long continuous takes versus short bursts. If you're doing interviews, you'll need a totally different strategy than if you're just grabbing b-roll around the city. Seattle can be surprisingly humid too which never helps with cooling... just something to think about before you blow that last bit of budget.

Pick up several Panasonic DMW-BLK22 2200mAh spares because theyre essential. For 5.7K ProRes, the Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B 128GB Diamond Series provides the thermal headroom youll need.

Regarding what #3 said about "@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly tho, in my experience, just carrying a mountain of spares gets expensive and kinda messy"

  • I totally agree with QuantumQuest there! I remember doing a 10-hour wedding in the humidity of Georgia and I literally ran out of charged cells by hour 6... it was a total disaster and I felt like such a failure trying to find a wall outlet while the cake was being cut. Never again! Since you're on a budget for the Seattle trip, you gotta check out these life-savers:
  • SmallRig DMW-BLK22 DC Coupler - hooks up to any big battery and gives you infinite power.
  • ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B Gold 256GB - way cheaper than the Diamond series but still handles ProRes like a champ without the heat errors.
  • SmallRig GH6 Black Mamba Cage - helps a ton with heat soak by giving the metal more surface area to breathe. Honestly, going the dummy battery route changed my life! It is amazing how much stress just evaporates when you see 4 hours of runtime on your screen instead of 30 minutes. You'll save a ton of money over buying five official Panasonic batteries, and it's way more reliable for long shoots. Love my GH6 but yeah, she's a thirsty one for sure!
