Been using my GH5 for ages but my old shotgun mic is suddenly picking up way more interference than usual and its driving me nuts. Need a replacement under 200 bucks for some street interviews im doing downtown tomorrow. What external mics are you guys using that actually sound clean on Lumix?

I am totally obsessed with my GH5 but man, interference is the absolute worst! I had this horrific experience shooting near a radio tower once where my audio sounded like static garbage and it basically ruined the whole gig. Ever since then I am super paranoid about shielding and reliability. You definitely want something that can handle the city noise without picking up those weird electronic hums!

Regarding what #1 said about "I am totally obsessed with my GH5 but..."

  • I feel that 100%! I have tested a ton of gear on my GH5 and for street interviews you absolutely need a super-cardioid pattern to kill that city background noise. I highly recommend the <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+400+%282nd+Generation%29+Shotgun+Microphone&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 400 (2nd Generation) Shotgun Microphone. It is incredible because it has an internal suspension mount so you dont get that annoying handling noise when you are moving around downtown. Here is why it rocks for your setup:
  • Built-in wind protection and shock mount is a lifesaver for outdoor work.
  • 3-step sensitivity switch lets you bypass the internal camera preamps.
  • Auto power-on/off is amazing so you dont accidentally kill your battery. Basically, it is way better shielded than the cheap stuff and fits your budget perfectly. Just make sure your gain is set low on the camera and high on the mic to keep the signal-to-noise ratio clean. It makes a massive difference!

Like someone mentioned, interference is a nightmare. Had issues with cheap cables ruining a whole wedding shoot tho. Unfortunately, shielding is often terrible.

  • try shielded cables
  • check preamps Not as good as expected.

Yeah Goedem is totally right about the handling noise and interference being a massive headache. Reliability is basically the only thing that matters when youre out in the field and things start going sideways. Honestly this reminds me so much of a shoot I did a few years back with my old GH4. I was doing this super formal interview near an old hospital and every single time an ambulance went past my headphones just started blasting this weird rhythmic clicking. Ngl I legit thought the camera was possessed or something. I spent like twenty minutes swapping out every cable I owned and blowing into the ports like an old Nintendo cartridge while the subject just sat there checking their watch. It was a total nightmare and I never actually figured out if it was the hospital equipment or just some freak radio interference in the air that day. Just one of those tech mysteries that haunts you forever... anyway good luck with the search tho!
