need a mic for my Lumix S5 for a wedding this Friday in Chicago. saw the Rode VideoMic Pro+ and MKE 400 but people say cables block the flip out screen on these bodies which is a huge dealbreaker.
actually panicking cuz i need to order today...
I ruined a wedding shoot once cuz a cable snagged my S5 screen and yanked the camera mid-pan... really gotta be careful with those inputs. You might want to consider:
Tbh, I've tried many, these cleared my Lumix screen best:
Building on the earlier suggestion, unfortunately on-camera mics just arent as good as expected for loud weddings. Id skip the expensive ones. Use a Movo VXR10-PRO Compact Shotgun Microphone with a right-angle cable to keep the S5 screen clear. Its way cheaper too. TL;DR: Get a budget mic and spend the rest on a Tascam DR-10L Digital Audio Recorder for the groom. Better safe than sorry.
I would suggest being really careful with the generic brands because the Lumix S series has that weird jack placement. You might want to look into the official Panasonic accessories instead since they actually test for that screen clearance. I remember shooting a wedding in Chicago years ago near the river and the acoustics were so echoey it didnt even matter what mic I had. The wedding planner was a total nightmare too, kept telling me where to stand every five seconds like she was the director or something. I almost tripped over a flower arrangement and landed right in the cake. Anyway lol, sorry kinda went off topic there.
Saw this earlier but just now responding... honestly, if you want total reliability for a wedding, you really should just stick with any of the official Panasonic audio gear. I've tried many setups over the years, and you cant go wrong with the brand-name modules that slide directly into the hot shoe. Since they are made by the same engineers who built the body, the clearance for the flip-out screen is actually factored into the design. Plus, using the dedicated interface instead of the 3.5mm jack means you wont have to worry about flimsy cables yanking on your screen or picking up interference during a loud reception. Just get whatever shotgun or shoe-mount adapter Panasonic makes for that specific mount. It is the only way to be 100% sure everything will clear properly while handling the high SPL levels.
