ive got this wedding shoot coming up next saturday in seattle and i am freaking out because my current cards keep giving me that recording stopped error on my GH5. i looked up some stuff online and people keep saying the SanDisk Extreme Pro is fine but then other threads say you absolutely need V60 or even V90 cards for the 400Mbps 10-bit stuff. im so confused because the price jump to V90 is insane and i only have like 100 bucks left for two cards. is the V60 actually reliable for long takes or am i gonna ruin this couples video? what are you guys actually using for high bitrate 4K on a budget?

The math on this is actually pretty simple once you break it down. Your GH5 shoots at 400Mbps, which means the card needs to handle a sustained write speed of 50MB/s. The problem with the SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB V30 UHS-I is that V30 only guarantees 30MB/s. That gap is why your recording keeps cutting out. You dont need V90 cards for this, as those are rated for 90MB/s and designed for much higher bitrates than what the GH5 puts out. V60 is the specific tier you need since it guarantees 60MB/s. To stay under your 100 dollar budget for two cards, look at these:

  • Lexar Professional 1667x 128GB SDXC UHS-II V60
  • These are usually around 40 dollars each. They are basic but hit the speed requirements perfectly for weddings.
  • ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold 128GB
  • These often go on sale for about 50 bucks. They are generally considered more reliable than Lexar for professional work.
  • Angelbird AV Pro SD MK2 V60 128GB
  • Another solid V60 option if you find a good deal. I have used the Lexar 1667x cards for years on the GH5 and never had a single failure at 400Mbps. Just make sure you are using UHS-II cards. V30 cards will work for the 150Mbps or 100Mbps settings, but for the All-I 400Mbps files, you absolutely have to have that second row of pins found on UHS-II V60 cards. You wont ruin the video if you stick to V60... it is the industry standard for that specific bitrate.

Like someone mentioned, that bitrate math is the absolute dealbreaker. I have been through enough wedding day stress to know that using V30 cards for 400Mbps is basically a ticking time bomb. I made the switch to V60 a while back and honestly I have been so satisfied with how they handle the GH5 files.

  • Angelbird AV PRO SD MK2 V60 128GB
  • These are my favorites. I used a pair for a long marathon shoot last summer and they worked perfectly without a single dropped frame. They usually fit right in that budget too.
  • ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 128GB Gold
  • I keep these as primary backups. They feel really well-built and I've never had a write error, even when the card is almost full. Tbh V60 is the sweet spot. You get the stability without the V90 tax... definitely saves the wallet and your sanity for the big day.

^ This. Also, ive unfortunately had issues with budget chips not meeting advertised V-rated write speeds... reminds me of when my buddy dropped his rig into a fountain. total disaster. anyway, but yeah.
