What are the best weather-sealed lenses for the Lumix S series that can actually handle some serious rain? I'm heading over to the Scottish Highlands this October and it's gonna be super soggy so I need something that won't die the second a cloud looks at it.

I've got the S5II body which I know is a tank but I'm struggling with the glass choice. I read online that the Panasonic 24-105mm f4 is the standard safe choice but then I saw a bunch of forum posts saying it's really just splash resistant and might fail if it gets properly soaked. Then people mention the 24-70 f2.8 Pro but that's like way out of my budget since I'm trying to stay under $1100 or so for this trip.

I was looking at some Sigma stuff too since they're cheaper. The 24-70mm Art seems okay but I've heard conflicting stuff about whether the weather sealing on the L-mount version is actually as good as the native Lumix stuff. I really don't want to be stuck in Glencoe with a fogged up lens and a $1k paperweight.

Does anyone here actually take their S series out in the pouring rain? Is it better to stick with the Lumix primes or is there a zoom that actually holds up without costing three months rent...

Ive spent a lot of time analyzing the sealing specs for L-mount and honestly, manufacturers are super vague. Most just say dust and splash resistant because they dont want to pay for official IPX ratings. For Glencoe in October, you really need to be careful with any lens that extends when zooming because that physical movement can actually pull humid air or moisture past the barrel seals.

  • I would suggest looking at the Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f4 Macro OIS if you need the range, but just keep a dry microfiber handy at all times.
  • Make sure to consider the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art for L-Mount since it has a brass mount with a rubber gasket and seals at every join, though it might be slightly more prone to internal fogging than the Lumix Pro stuff.
  • You might want to carry a prime like the Panasonic Lumix S 35mm f1.8 for the really messy days since primes have fewer moving parts and points of failure compared to zooms. Even with a sealed kit, the weak point is usually the lens mount interface itself. If water pools there and seeps in, it can fry the electronics regardless of the glass. I would suggest grabbing a dedicated rain cover for the really heavy stuff. It helps take the stress off when the wind starts kicking horizontal rain at you...
