Best external monitors for Panasonic S5II mirrorless cameras?

So I finally pulled the trigger on the Lumix S5II after using the original S5 for years and man the phase detect is a total lifesaver but I am hitting a wall with my monitor setup. I have an old SmallHD Focus that I have been using forever but for some reason it is acting super finicky with the 6K open gate settings on the new body. Like the image just feels... off? Not sure if it is a lag thing or if the resolution is just weirding out the scaling on the monitor since its only a 720p panel but its driving me crazy during focus pulls.

I am mostly doing high-end event work here in Chicago and I got a big wedding shoot coming up in about three weeks so I really need to get this sorted before then. My logic was just to grab an Atomos Ninja V because literally everyone uses them but I have been reading some horror stories about the fan noise on the Ninja matching up with the S5II fan and making this weird resonance or something? Plus I dont really need external recording that much since the internal 10-bit on the S5II is already incredible so it feels like I am paying for a recorder I wont even use.

I was looking at the PortKeys LH5P II because I heard you can actually control the camera settings through the monitor which sounds amazing for when I have it up on a gimbal and cant reach the dials easily. But then I saw some guy on a group saying the color accuracy is trash out of the box and it takes forever to calibrate. I just need something bright enough for outdoor ceremonies that wont lie to me about my exposure or clip the UI elements when I am shooting in weird aspect ratios. Is anyone else using the S5II with a specific 5 or 7 inch monitor that handles the 6K output well without crashing? Budget is around 600 bucks but I can stretch it if it actually solves the problem and doesnt give me the black screen of death every time I switch frame rates. Kinda stuck between staying with a known brand or trying one of these newer ones like SeeMo or Desview...

> My logic was just to grab an Atomos Ninja V because literally everyone uses them but I have been reading some horror stories about the fan noise In my experience, you're right to be wary. I've tried many over the years and the Atomos Shinobi 5-inch 4K HDMI Monitor is a much safer bet if you don't need recording. It's super reliable, handles the 6K signal perfectly, and is way cheaper than the Ninja. It's light enough for gimbals too. Definitely worth looking at before spending $600.

If you're trying to save cash but still want that camera control, the PortKeys LH5P II 5.5 Inch 2200nit High Brightness is a solid bet. The 6K feed works fine and the 2200 nits is plenty for outdoor weddings. If you don't care about control and just want a cheap daylight screen, the FeelWorld LUT5 5.5 Inch 3000nit Ultra Bright is crazy bright for like half your budget and handles scaling well.

Coming back to this... I had the exact same scaling drama with my S5II last summer. Those older 720p panels just cant handle the 6K open gate signal and everything looks soft or weirdly stretched. I almost caved and bought a Ninja but I really hate paying for recording features I dont use. I tried a few cheaper routes to save money for glass and eventually landed on a setup that works for me:

  • Osee T5+ 5.5 Inch 1000nits Camera Field Monitor has amazing software tools that actually look professional, unlike some of the cheaper brands.
  • Desview R6 UHB 5.5 Inch 2800nit Ultra High Brightness is my go-to for outdoor stuff now. It is legit bright but you gotta be careful because it gets pretty hot after an hour. I actually tried building a DIY sunhood for my old monitor first to save money but it was just too clunky for weddings. I would suggest making sure your HDMI cable is actually rated for the high bandwidth or you will get those black screens you mentioned. I learned that the hard way mid-shoot... its the worst feeling.

Honestly I gotta disagree with just going for the big names everyone mentions! I've seen so many shooters regret getting monitors that wash out during bright outdoor ceremonies... it is a total nightmare! Watch out for:

  • low-nit screens (you really need 2000+ nits)
  • cheap cables that drop the 6K feed
  • heavy rigs that ruin your gimbal balance The S5II is absolutely amazing tho, you are gonna have a blast with it!
