im so pumped for my tokyo trip next month but honestly the internal audio on my lumix g7 is trash and picking up way too much wind. its legit ruining my test footage and im desperate for a fix before i go. whats the best external mic for lumix g series that wont break the bank?

Grab the Rode VideoMicro II Supercardioid Shotgun Mic! The 20Hz to 20kHz frequency response is amazing and the 75dB signal-to-noise ratio is fantastic for such a compact unit, honestly!

saw this earlier and wanted to jump in since ive spent way too much time obsessing over g7 audio specs. honestly im really satisfied with my current setup after testing a bunch of gear. my journey actually started with a cheap generic mic but i kept getting interference until i moved to something with better shielding. the <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+200+Super-Cardioid+On-Camera+Mic&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 Super-Cardioid On-Camera Mic has been a total lifesaver because its got an internal suspension and a built-in windscreen that actually works well. its rated for 120 dB max SPL which is perfect for noisy city streets. another one i like is the Deity V-Mic D4 Mini Compact Shotgun Microphone because its super lightweight and doesnt need a battery. Quick tips for ya:

  • set your in-camera gain to the lowest possible setting usually -12dB on the g7 to avoid hiss.
  • always carry a dedicated fuzzy deadcat for those windy tokyo bridges no matter what the box says about internal protection.

Re: "saw this earlier and wanted to jump in..." - agreed, cheap stuff is usually a headache. Honestly, I’ve had issues with flimsy mounts snapping on those tiny rigs, which is super annoying when you're traveling. Unfortunately, most budget mics feel like toys. I’d go with the <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+200+Directional+On-Camera+Microphone&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 Directional On-Camera Microphone because it’s way sturdier. Quick tip: keep your gain low in-camera to avoid that annoying hiss from the G7 preamps.
