Which external flash works best with Nikon DSLR models for portraits?

I've been staring at my screen for three hours and I'm honestly about to throw my Nikon D780 out the window if I cant figure out which flash to buy. I have this portrait shoot for a local senior high school kid in two weeks and my old flash just totally crapped out on me—the battery door wont stay shut and it misfires every third shot. I need something that is reliable for outdoor portraits where I'm fighting against the afternoon sun but every review I read just makes me more annoyed.

I spent all morning looking into the Nikon SB-5000 because obviously stick with the brand name right? But then I saw people saying the interface is a total mess and you basically need a PhD to use the radio control stuff without buying more expensive adapters. Plus its like 600 bucks which is way more than I wanted to drop right now since I just bought a new 85mm lens last month. Then I looked at the Godox V1 because everyone raves about that round head and the magnetic modifiers but then I found a bunch of threads saying the plastic hot shoe foot just snaps off if you breathe on it wrong and the firmware updates are a nightmare if you dont have a PC.

Im just trying to get soft, even light for these portraits without having to carry around a giant softbox and a studio strobe. I need something that talks to my Nikon properly and wont overheat after twenty shots. My budget is around 400ish but I could push it if it actually works. Do I just bite the bullet and get the expensive Nikon one or is there a third option I'm missing that actually has decent build quality and good TTL for portraits? Which external flash is actually going to work best with my Nikon setup without making me want to scream?

I totally get being scared of that Godox build quality. You might want to consider the Godox V860III-N TTL Li-ion Flash for Nikon instead of the V1. It is way cheaper than the Nikon SB-5000 (around 230 bucks) but finally has a decent metal foot.

  • 76Ws power output
  • HSS up to 1/8000s
  • 1.5s recycle time Just be careful with the firmware stuff, tho the TTL is actually pretty spot on for portraits.

Saw those Godox feet snap personally, it's not fun. Moving to a used Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight was the best move for me because the TTL communication is just more consistent. It fits your $400 budget easily, though you should be careful about the 28m guide number. It handles heat way better than third-party units, so you wont get those annoying mid-shoot lockups when fighting the sun.

^ This. Also, make sure to watch your thermal limits when using High-Speed Sync (HSS) to fight the sun. It forces the flash to pulse rapidly, which generates massive heat. Basically kills your recycle times too. If the SB-700 lacks the power, look at the Godox AD100Pro 100Ws Pocket Flash. I would suggest pairing it with the Godox AK-R1 Magnetic Accessory Kit for quick light shaping. Its more reliable for portraits.

Saw this earlier but just getting home... honestly, if you want something that just works and wont break your heart mid-shoot, look for a used Nikon SB-910 AF Speedlight. It is an absolute tank compared to the newer plastic stuff. I have used one for years and the heat management is miles better than the newer SB-5000 in some ways because it does not need that annoying internal fan to keep going. You can usually find them for under 300 bucks on the used market. I would suggest being careful with the cheaper third-party brands if you are fighting the sun because HSS will drain them fast. If you really want that round head look though, the Godox V1Pro-N Speedlight is the updated version that specifically fixed the overheating issues and the weak hot shoe everyone complained about on the original V1. It might be worth the stretch. Just make sure to pair the Nikon with some Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA 2500mAh 4-Pack batteries to keep those recycle times fast. You are gonna do great with the senior portraits, just breathe!
