my sisters wedding is in literally two weeks and im freaking out because im the designated photographer and i still havent bought an external flash for my d7500. the venue is this super moody dark loft space here in chicago and i know the popup flash is gonna look terrible and wash everyone out. i did some digging and everyone keeps mentioning the nikon sb-700 as the safest bet but it seems really old and i dont want to spend over 300 bucks on tech from ten years ago if i dont have to. then i looked at the godox v860iii because the lithium battery sounds like a lifesaver but some reviews say the ttl exposure is all over the place with nikon dslrs specifically and i really dont have time to be fiddling with manual settings while people are dancing. im just so anxious about picking the wrong one and having it overheat or just not fire when i need it most. my budget is capped at like $320. has anyone here actually used the godox stuff on a d7500 or should i just suck it up and buy the official nikon one even if it feels outdated? i just need something that actually talks to the camera properly...
I have been using Godox for a bit now and im honestly super satisfied with the results on my Nikon. The TTL issues people talk about are usually fixed with a quick firmware update. The Godox V1-N Round Head Speedlight for Nikon works well for those dark venues.
^ This. Also, i gotta say i respectfully disagree about needing the V1 or the old Nikon stuff. I have been using the Godox V860III-N TTL Li-ion Flash for Nikon for ages at wedding receptions and honestly its such a solid workhorse. People worry way too much about those TTL issues they read online... if the exposure feels a little off, just tap that flash exposure compensation button by a third of a stop and youre golden. I shot a huge warehouse party last summer with it and the battery lasted the entire night without a swap. It saved my life because i totally forgot my spares lol. Quick tip: Since the venue is a dark loft, just point the flash head at the ceiling or a wall behind you to bounce the light. It makes everything look way softer than any round head or plastic diffuser ever will. For under $230 you really cant beat it.
Honestly, for a wedding, I would suggest playing it safe. I remember shooting my cousins engagement party with a budget third-party flash and the TTL just decided to stop communicating properly halfway through the toasts. It was a total nightmare. Everyone looked like ghosts in one shot and then it was pitch black the next. You really dont want that level of stress when its your sisters big day in a dark Chicago loft. The Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight might be an older design, but there is a reason people still swear by it. It just works. Here is why you might want to consider it over the newer stuff:
