Ive been shooting on a D850 for years but I'm finally getting into event work next month and realized my old manual flashes just dont cut it for fast-paced stuff. I need something that handles i-TTL perfectly without overheating during a long reception. Which external flash works best with Nikon DSLR bodies these days?
I remember my first wedding where my flash died... it sucked. Since then, I been super happy with these on my D850:
Regarding what #1 said about sticking with first-party gear to ensure reliability... it is definitely the safest path but man, those SB-5000s get real expensive if you need a backup. And you definitely need a backup for pro work. I have been shooting events for a decade and seen plenty of gear fail at the worst times. Before I dive into the deep end with advice though, what is your budget like for this? And are you planning to stay on-camera or move to off-camera lighting eventually? Knowing your typical venue size helps too. If you are looking for alternatives, you might want to consider the Godox V1-N Li-ion Round Head Camera Flash for Nikon. Tbh, the li-ion battery is a total game changer for long receptions because you arent swapping AAs every hour. The recycle time stays consistent even when the battery is low. Just be careful with the plastic mounting foot though, it can be a weak point if you bump into things in a crowd. I would suggest looking at the Godox V860III-N TTL Flash for Nikon as well if you want a more traditional beam shape. Both handle i-TTL pretty well on my D850. Make sure to get an extra Godox VB26A Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery just in case, though one usually lasts me a whole 8-hour shift. Just keep an eye on the thermal warning if you are rapid-firing at full power... even with the cooling improvements on newer models, it can still happen if you arent careful during those fast-paced dance floor sets.
I would suggest sticking with first-party gear to ensure reliability. You might want to consider the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight because it features an internal cooling system designed specifically for heavy event use. Be careful with third-party flashes that lack proper thermal management. Make sure to monitor your recycle times during the reception so you dont accidentally overwork the electronics... it's probably the safest bet for your D850.
