I need to know which external flash is actually the most reliable for current Nikon DSLRs because I am freaking out a bit. I spent all night looking at the SB-5000 and people say it is the gold standard but then I see others claiming the Godox V1 is better value and I just dont know who to trust. I have a wedding shoot in three weeks here in Chicago and my old speedlight just gave up. My budget is around $400 tops and I am terrified of getting something that overheats or has slow recycle times during the reception. Is the Nikon brand name really worth the extra $200 or am I just overthinking this whole thing...

Totally get the pre-wedding jitters! Chicago weddings can be intense but you honestly dont need to drop $600 on the brand name. For your $400 budget, I recommend looking at these two instead:

  • Godox V1-N TTL Flash with Round Head: This unit is amazing! The recycle time is insanely fast because of the lithium battery and the round head provides such smooth light falloff for portraits.
  • Godox V860III-N TTL Li-ion Flash: This is basically the V1 but with a traditional rectangular head. It is a fantastic choice if you want reliability without the round-head price tag. Ngl, the Godox lithium batteries are the real winner here. You wont be fumbling with AAs in the dark! I love the V1 for weddings because it just keeps going. The Nikon brand is nice but it isnt $200 better anymore...

To add to the point above: unfortunately the V1 overheats way too easily. Been there. Just grab the Godox V860III-N TTL Li-Ion Flash for Nikon instead; its much more reliable for fast reception sequences.
