So I finally bit the bullet and traded in my old D850 for a Z7II and I'm honestly kind of panicking right now. I have this huge winter wedding coming up in downtown Chicago in like two weeks and I realized my old third party flashes are acting all wonky with the FTZ adapter or just not hitting the exposure right. I need a dedicated speedlight that actually talks to the Z system properly without me having to fiddle with settings every five seconds because the reception venue is basically a cave. Super low ceilings but dark wood everywhere so its gonna be a nightmare for lighting.
I spent all last night looking at the SB-5000 because obviously its the official one but man the price tag is making me sweat. Nearly 600 bucks for a flash that came out years ago? It feels like I'm paying for a name. Then I saw a ton of people raving about the Godox V1 or the V860III but then I read some horror stories on a sub-reddit about the pins on the hot shoe not lining up perfectly with the Z series or even worse snapping off because the fit is too tight. I cant have my gear failing in the middle of a first dance you know?
Budget wise I'd like to stay under $450 if possible but I can stretch it if it means I wont have a meltdown on the day. I also looked at the Profoto A10 but that is way out of my league right now. Is the Nikon SB-700 still a thing or is that too weak for a big ballroom? Im just getting really overwhelmed with the compatibility stuff because some people say it works fine and others say the TTL is totally inconsistent on mirrorless compared to the old DSLRs. I just want something that is reliable and wont overheat after twenty shots. Should I just suck it up and get the SB-5000 or is there a Godox setup that actually works 100% of the time with the Z mount?
Late to this but be careful with old tech. I used the Nikon SB-910 AF Speedlight for years and it was a beast, but the recycle times on AAs might kill you in a dark cave. If youre on a budget, you might want to consider the Godox V860III-N TTL Li-ion Flash. The lithium battery is a game changer for long receptions. Ive used it on my Z7II without the pins snapping, just gotta be gentle when locking it down.
Re: "I totally feel your pain!! I went through..."
I totally feel your pain!! I went through the exact same panic when I switched to my Nikon Z7II right before a big winter gala. I thought I could just slap on my old gear and be fine, but oh boy, was I wrong! It was a total mess and I spent half the night apologizing to the event planner because my exposures were all over the place. I was so stressed I literally almost cried in the bathroom lol. You really have to be careful with a few things when picking your setup for a Z series:
