im honestly just done with my current bag situation and its driving me crazy. spent a fortune on my Nikon Z8 and the 70-200mm f2.8 S lens but every time i put it in my backpack i feel like im just begging for a cracked lens or a bent mount. I bought this generic tactical-style bag thinking it would be rugged because it looked tough in the photos but the dividers are basically made of wet cardboard and they dont even stick to the sides anymore. my logic was that a bag is just a bag right? but man i was so wrong. every time i set the bag down on the floor in the train or even just on the sidewalk here in Chicago i hear this terrifying thud because the bottom padding is basically non-existent.
so i was thinking about switching to something actually designed for mirrorless setups because the dimensions of the Z cameras are just different enough from my old DSLRs that nothing fits quite right. i looked at the peak design stuff but honestly im worried the dividers are too thin for a heavy body like the Z8. then i saw those shimoda backpacks and they look great but they are so expensive and i only have maybe 250 bucks left in my budget for this month after buying my last lens. i need to find something by next week because im heading out for a landscape shoot and i just cant trust what i have right now.
does anyone actually make a bag where the dividers dont collapse under the weight of a pro mirrorless body? im tired of my gear sloshing around like its in a laundry machine every time i take a step. I was even considering those hard cases with the foam but i need to be able to actually hike with it for a few miles so thats probably a bad idea. my head is spinning with all these youtube reviews and half of them feel like paid ads anyway. just want something that actually protects the mount and the glass without being a massive heavy box...
I spent months worrying about my Z8 lens mount bending too! I finally found two options that feel super safe:
Unfortunately, many modern bag designs are not as good as expected and lack the structural integrity required for a Z8. I have had issues with flimsy padding myself and it is quite disappointing. For your budget, the Think Tank Photo StreetWalker Pro V2.0 17L Backpack is a solid choice. Its divider system is methodical and wont fail under the weight of pro glass. It is definitely rugged enough for your upcoming landscape shoot.
Just found this thread while looking at some gear specs. Dealing with a heavy Z8 and that 70-200mm S glass means you really need something with high-density EVA foam rather than the cheap open-cell stuff found in those tactical clones. I would suggest looking at the Lowepro ProTactic BP 450 AW II. It has what they call FormShell technology which provides a semi-rigid exterior, so you wont get that terrifying thud when setting it down on concrete. The dividers are actually structural and designed to stay put even with a pro body and heavy lens combo. Another option that fits your budget is the Vanguard Alta Sky 53 Backpack. Its built specifically for these larger mirrorless setups and the harness system is actually decent for hiking. Both of these use much higher-grade materials and should handle the mount stress just fine without collapsing.
