My main flash just crapped out on me and I have a huge family reunion shoot this Saturday so I am kinda panicking. I need a replacement ASAP and I am torn between the Nikon SB-700 and the Godox V860III. The Nikon is legendary for being reliable but the Godox has that lithium battery which sounds amazing for long days and it is way cheaper too.
I have about 300 dollars to spend and I am using a D850 mostly. Is the third party Godox actually gonna work okay with Nikon's i-TTL or should I just play it safe with the SB-700 even though it is older tech? I gotta hit buy in the next few hours to get shipping...
If you have a big shoot this Saturday, staying with native gear is the most reliable move. I have used both and here is my take:
I remember when I first started out, I was terrified of third-party gear failing me. I stuck with the official stuff for years because I thought it was the only way to be pro. But honestly, after a few hundred shoots, you realize what actually matters is not having to fiddle with gear when the moments are happening. I remember this one summer wedding in a dark barn. I was sweating bullets trying to swap out eight rechargeable AA batteries in the dark while the couple was doing their first dance. Total disaster. That is exactly why I swapped to the Godox V860III-N TTL Li-ion Flash. That lithium battery is no joke... I can go through a whole weekend reunion and barely see the battery meter drop. It is a lifesaver when you are busy wrangling family members for group shots and dont want to worry about recycle times slowing you down. For under 300 bucks, you are getting way more bang for your buck with the Godox. The Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight is a tank, dont get me wrong, but it feels like using tech from 2010. The i-TTL on the Godox works perfectly with my D850 in my experience. If you really want to level up, look at the Godox V1-N Round Head Flash too. It has a much softer light fall-off which is great for group shots at reunions where you dont want those harsh shadows. Honestly, just get the Godox and use the leftover cash for some extra storage or something.
Building on the earlier suggestion, honestly you just gotta check out some technical teardowns because the data on these is amazing!
