Ive been shooting for a decade but I just got the Nikon 600mm f/4 and my current setup is completely sagging. My logic was that my old Manfrotto could handle it but its a shaky mess.
I need a real beast for my Maine trip next month, budget is around 800 bucks. What actually stays still?
You might want to consider the Leofoto LM-363C Summit Series Carbon Fiber Tripod since it uses 36mm tubes. Be careful with those 600mm primes, they catch wind like crazy and cause vibration. I would suggest making sure your mounting plate is perfectly balanced too. honestly, the Benro Mammoth TMTH44C Carbon Fiber Tripod is also solid and might be safer for heavy glass.
@Reply #1 - good point! I went through a similar mess with a sagging head once. Spent weeks comparing the Sirui R-5214X Carbon Fiber Tripod and the Induro CLT403 Stealth Carbon Fiber Tripod. The Sirui is basically a tank and handles heavy gear with zero drift, tho it is pretty bulky. The Induro is lighter for hiking, but for pure stability in the wind, the Sirui felt way more solid. Definitely better than standard legs.

Just saw this pop up. I remember when I first got my big glass, I was terrified of my gear hitting the dirt. I actually spent a week DIY-ing some custom sandbags and leg wraps just to feel safe because I didnt trust my old setup at all. I eventually found a system I am super satisfied with, been using it for a year now with no complaints and it works well even in high winds. Honestly tho, before you drop $800, you should really just check out YouTube. There is a specific guy who does a massive stress test on heavy-duty legs for big primes... just search for 600mm tripod stability comparison and its like the first result that comes up. He basically does all the scientific testing for you. Ngl, that video is the only reason I felt confident enough to buy my current setup. The manufacturer sites also have those detailed load capacity charts if you dig into their support pages, so maybe look there too.
Just catching up on this thread. Backlitnax is right about the wind... you really have to be careful when youre shooting near the water. That 600mm f/4 is basically a sail. Quick question tho, what kind of head are you using on your current setup? You mentioned sagging, which makes me think the issue might be the head and not just the legs. I would suggest making sure youre looking at the whole system before you drop the full 800 bucks. You might want to consider if the vibration is actually coming from a weak head or a loose plate. Are you using a gimbal or just a ball head?
