I need a tripod like yesterday. My old one literally snapped at the leg hinge yesterday and I have a big trip to the coast for a landscape workshop starting in six days so I am in a total crunch. I shoot with a Nikon D850 which is already a heavy beast and when I put my 70-200mm f/2.8 on there it feels like a lead weight so I need something that wont just tip over the second a breeze hits it. I am currently looking at three specific options but I am totally torn and need to pull the trigger tonight to get the shipping handled on time.
First is the Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod. I love how small it packs down because I am gonna be hiking a lot but I am honestly worried it is too spindly for a heavy full-frame Nikon body? Like is it actually stable or just social media hype? Then there is the Manfrotto 055 carbon fiber kit. I know Manfrotto is like the gold standard for some people and it feels like it could survive a nuclear blast but man it looks bulky and heavy to carry on a pack for 5-10 miles a day. Lastly I was looking at the Benro Mach3 series mostly because the price is better and people say it is a great Gitzo clone but I have never actually touched one in person so I dont know if the build quality is actually there.
My specific constraints for this:
I am leaning towards the Peak Design because of the portability but if it is gonna shake while I am doing 30-second exposures then it is a total waste of money right? Or should I just suck it up and get the heavy Manfrotto legs and deal with the back pain? If anyone uses these with a heavy Nikon setup please tell me if I am making a huge mistake before I hit the checkout button...
Quick reply while I have a sec. In my experience, vibration on windy cliffs usually originates from the center column. I've tried many setups over the years to find what is actually reliable. Are you shooting mostly at eye-level? Check the Sirui W-2204 Carbon Fiber Waterproof Tripod:
