I finally pulled the trigger on a Nikon Z8 last month and man the files are gorgeous but my old Manfrotto aluminum legs are just killing my back on trails. I'm doing a trip to Olympic National Park in about three weeks and really need to lighten the load before I head out. I've been obsessing over reviews and I'm basically torn between two very different paths right now. On one hand there's the Peak Design Travel Tripod in carbon fiber which looks amazing for packing down small but I'm worried it might be a bit too "fiddly" with those leg clips when I'm wearing gloves in the rain. Then I'm looking at the Gitzo Mountaineer Series 1... it's iconic and probably more stable but its definitely more expensive and doesn't get as compact. My budget is topping out around $700ish because the Z8 already emptied my bank account lol. I mostly do long exposures of waterfalls and coastal stuff so stability in the wind is a big deal for me. The Peak Design is so tempting for the space saving but is it actually gonna hold a Z8 with the 24-120mm steady enough? Or should I just suck it up and get the Gitzo even if it hangs off the side of my bag more? Not sure which way to go...

^ This. Also, I honestly had a bad experience trying to go too lightweight with my Z8. It felt like one gust of wind at the coast would just tip the whole thing over. Unfortunately, those ultra-slim legs just didnt feel secure enough for such a pricy camera, which was really disappointing. Since youre going to be in the rain at Olympic, have you looked at the Sirui ST-124 Carbon Fiber Waterproof Tripod? It has seals on the legs to keep out sand and salt water which is huge for coastal stuff. It feels way more reliable than the PD. Before I suggest more tho, are you planning on using anything heavier than that 24-120mm? Stability is scary to manage if youre throwing a big zoom on there. You might also like the Benro Rhino Carbon Fiber Tripod FRN14C because it feels way more substantial than the tiny travel kits.

  • Totally agree! That camera is way too heavy for those skinny PD legs. I love my Z8 but it really needs some beefy support. I have been using the 3Legged Thing Winston 2.0 Carbon Fiber Tripod System and its a total beast! Seriously, its rock solid for long exposures but way cheaper than a Gitzo. Build is fantastic and it handles coastal wind like a pro. Your Z8 deserves the stability tho!

My buddy told me the exact same thing last week. Guess he was right lol.

Honestly, I have used the Peak Design Travel Tripod Carbon Fiber with a heavy setup and it is a bit of a trade-off. Since you are heading to Olympic NP, you are gonna deal with wind and soft ground. The PD is amazing for packing, but those thin lower legs flex more than you would think under a Z8. If you are doing 30-second exposures of waterfalls, that micro-vibration is a real killer. The Gitzo Mountaineer Series 1 Carbon Fiber is basically the industry standard for a reason. It handles wind way better and the twist locks are much easier to manage with wet hands or gloves compared to those tiny PD clips. If your budget is tight, check out the Leofoto LS-284C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber. It is rock solid and fits your $700 cap easily. Stability should always come first for long exposures, even if it adds a few inches to your pack.
