honestly fed up with my current setup and im ready to just toss this old aluminum tripod off a cliff at this point. i spent way too much money on my nikon z7ii and the 24-120mm lens just to have every single long exposure come out blurry because the legs on this thing are like actual wet noodles. i was out last weekend trying to catch the sunset near the coast and even a slight breeze had the viewfinder shaking like crazy and it took me forever to realize the ball head was slowly creeping downward the whole time. its just so frustrating when you put in all the effort to hike out to a spot and the gear fails you on the basic stuff.
im planning a trip to iceland in about five weeks so i really need to get this sorted before then because i know the wind there is gonna be ten times worse than what i dealt with last week. i dont want to carry a ten pound lead weight across glaciers but i absolutely need something that wont vibrate the second i look at it. i think i need to move to carbon fiber but there are so many options and i dont want to buy another lemon.
here is what im looking for:
i keep seeing the peak design travel tripod everywhere but im worried the legs are too thin for a heavier z series setup? or maybe something from benro or leofoto? i just want something that wont make me regret my life choices when im halfway up a mountain. what are you guys actually using that doesnt creep or shake every time a car drives by or the wind picks up... help me out because im losing my mind with these blurry files.
> Iceland wind is a boss fight... Agreed. Check out the Sirui ST-124 Carbon Fiber Tripod. Its sealed legs and 26lb capacity are perfect for budget-conscious hikers with a heavy 400mm lens setup.
Iceland wind is basically a boss fight for tripods. I remember being out at Diamond Beach a few years ago and watching a guys setup just topple because he was using a cheap aluminum kit. Total heartbreak. I learned my lesson the hard way too... bought a mid-range carbon fiber setup and never looked back. Since you are rocking the Z7II and that heavy 100-400mm, you really need to prioritize leg diameter over brand name hype. Ive been using the Leofoto LS-284C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod with LH-30 Ball Head for my landscape work and its been a tank. It doesnt have a center column, which sounds weird at first, but it makes it way more stable in high winds since there is less surface area for the breeze to catch. Plus it folds down tiny enough to fit in my carry-on bag easily. It saved me a bunch of money compared to the high-end brands but still holds my heavy glass without any of that annoying creep you mentioned. If you want something a bit more traditional, the Benro Mach3 2 Series Carbon Fiber Tripod TMA27C is another solid choice that wont blow your budget. Its rugged and handles the weight of the Z series lenses easily. Honestly, save the extra $200 you wouldve spent on a Peak Design and put it toward a good pair of waterproof boots for the glaciers. Just make sure whatever you get, you use the tripod foot on that 100-400mm instead of mounting to the camera body... thats usually where the sagging starts.
I kinda disagree that you need to spend a fortune to be satisfied. Using a little extra weight on my legs works well for me. It reminds me of my road trip through the states where i spent more on snacks than gas... that one gas station had the best jerky ive ever had. anyway lol. TL;DR: Technique and stability matter more than the price tag because most gear is fine.
